in Northeast-10 women's basketball at the Costello Athletic Center
Saturday afternoon. The Penmen improved to 12-8 and 7-8 in
the NE-10 with the win, while the River Hawks now stand at 7-13 and

Saturday's win was the first for
SNHU over UMass Lowell in women's basketball since a 61-57 win at
the SNHU Fieldhouse on February 22, 1995. The River Hawks had
been victorious in 29 straight games against the Penmen. It
also marked Southern New Hampshire's first win at the Costello
Center since January 23, 1990 (65-57), a span of 23 games.
Houghton finished 6-13 from the
floor and connected on a pair of three-pointers while also making
five steals. Alyssa Whitney
(Somerville, MA) totaled 14 points, going 6-6 at the free throw
line, while Jenny
McDade (Derry, NH) recorded eight points and nine
rebounds. Brooke Lefort

with 13 points and 12 rebounds while Megan Berry added 10 points.
UMass Lowell led 14-11 with just
over eight minutes to play in the first half on a layup by Carmon
before the Penmen ran off 11 straight points to take a 22-14 lead
with 5:04 left on a Whitney layup. The River Hawks cut the
lead to one, 27-26, with 1:02 left on a three-pointer by

play with 44 seconds before halftime to make it 30-26, which would
be the halftime score.
SNHU extended its lead to eight,
36-28, on a layup by McDade at the 17:15 mark. A 9-1 UML
spurt got the hosts within two, 39-37, with 14:07 left on an
Andressa Giacomini basket. The Penmen then held the River

a 12-1 spurt to get within eight, 63-55, with just over three
minutes to go on a Rahshala Valentine hoop, but it would get no
closer.
Southern New Hampshire shot 50%
from the floor in the second half (13-26) and 43.6% for the game
while limiting the River Hawks to 36.1% shooting from the
floor. The Penmen were just 14-27 at the free throw line, but
took 14 more trips to the charity stripe than UML, which was
11-13. The hosts held a 42-40 rebounding advantage.
Southern New Hampshire returns to
action on Wednesday when it hosts Merrimack College in a 5:30
contest at the SNHU Fieldhouse.
NOTES: Whitney has
recorded double figures in scoring in four straight games,
averaging 11.5 ppg over that span...SNHU and UMass Lowell were both
members of the now-defunct New England Collegiate Conference at the
time of the last Penmen win in the series...SNHU improved to 11-3
when holding teams under 40% from the floor.
