Women's Basketball Completes Season Sweep of Saint Anselm

MANCHESTER, N.H. - Alyssa Whitney (Somerville, MA) totaled 16 points and seven assists to lead Southern New Hampshire University to a 75-62 win over Saint Anselm College in Northeast-10 women's basketball Tuesday night at the SNHU Fieldhouse.  The Penmen, who complete the season sweep of their crosstown rival with the win, improve to 8-5 and 3-5 in the NE-10 with their sixth win in seven games.  The Hawks are now 3-9 and 1-6 in the league.

Whitney totaled 11 of her points in the first half and also contributed a pair of steals.  Ashara Carrington (Marblehead, MA) scored 15 points off the bench, 14 in the second half, while also grabbing eight rebounds, while Jenny McDade (Derry, NH) drained a pair of three-pointers and finished with 11 points.    Megan Smith (Smithfield, ME) totaled eight points on 4-6 shooting despite playing just 15 minutes due to foul trouble.

Megan Howard paced Saint Anselm with her sixth double-double of the season, recording 22 points and 10 rebounds.  Justine Lyons also scored 22 points, while Jennifer Gureckis added 10 points.

Southern New Hampshire trailed just once in the game, at 2-0, and opened up a 15-4 lead 5:51 into the game following a layup by Whitney.  Saint Anselm pulled within four, 22-18, with 8:56 left on a pair of free throws by Lyons, but would get no closer.  The Penmen took a 35-26 lead into halftime when Whitney drained a three from the left side with four seconds left.

SNHU used an 11-2 run midway through the second half to build a 52-35 lead with 11:15 to play following a three-pointer by McDade.  The Hawks used an 8-1 run to pull within nine, 59-50, with just under six minutes to go on a basket by Lyons, and cut the lead to nine two more times, but could not pull any closer.

The hosts forced 25 Saint Anselm turnovers which led to 29 points while committing a season-low 14 giveaways.  The Penmen held the Hawks to just 36.7% shooting in the second half.  Saint Anselm held a 39-35 rebounding advantage.

Southern New Hampshire returns to action Thursday night when it travels to Southern Connecticut State University for a 5:30 Northeast-10 contest.

NOTES: Southern New Hampshire has won four in a row against Saint Anselm and seven of the last eight meetings..McDade has reached double figures in scoring in four of the last five games.
