NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Magdala Johnson
(Sandown, NH) poured in a career-high 15 points to lead Southern
New Hampshire University to a 70-53 win over Southern Connecticut
State University in Northeast-10 women's basketball Thursday night
at Moore Fieldhouse. The Penmen, who won for the second
straight game and the seventh time in eight outings, improved to
9-5 and 4-5 in the NE-10, while the Owls are 5-9 and 2-7 in the
league.
Johnson, a sophomore in her first
season at SNHU after transferring from the University of Maine, was
5-7 from the floor and 2-3 behind the arc and totaled 12 of her
points in the first half. She also grabbed four
rebounds. Brooke Lefort
(Cumberland, RI) was 4-5 from the field and finished with eight
points and eight rebounds, while Stephanie
Houghton (Manchester, NH) registered seven points and
four assists. Megan Smith
(Smithfield, ME) added seven points, while Julia Houghtaling
(Franconia, NH) contributed six points while grabbing nine
rebounds.
Lexi Allen drained four
three-pointers and finished with 18 points to lead Southern
Connecticut, while Logan Lentz added 11 points.
Southern Connecticut built a 19-13
lead 9:16 into the game, but the Penmen used a 17-2 run to take a
30-21 lead 4:47 before intermission on a layup by Johnson.
Southern New Hampshire took its largest lead of the first half with
1:44 to play when Johnson converted a pair of free throws to make
it 36-25, which would be the halftime score.
The Owls scored the first five
points of the second half and an Allen three 2:29 into the frame
cut the lead to six, 36-30. SNHU scored the next six points
in a span of 55 seconds and a basket by Ashara Carrington
(Marblehead, MA) at the 16:36 mark made it 42-30. Southern
Connecticut used a 10-0 run to pull within two, 48-46, with 8:08
left on a three by Allen. The Penmen would then hold the Owls
scoreless for more than five minutes, scoring 13 unanswered points
to take a 61-46 lead with 3:40 to go on a basket by Lefort.
Southern New Hampshire shot 53.8%
from the floor for the game while limiting the Owls to 38.3%
shooting for the contest. The Penmen outrebounded the Owls
38-31 and were 10-16 at the free throw line, while SCSU was just
2-10 at the charity stripe.
SNHU returns home to host Saint
Rose in a 1:30 game Saturday at the SNHU Fieldhouse.
