MANCHESTER, N.H. - Senior Jenny
McDade (Derry, N.H.) scored a career-high 24 points and
added nine rebounds and four assists to lead Southern New Hampshire
University to an 84-52 women's basketball win over Mercy College
Sunday afternoon at the SNHU Fieldhouse. The Penmen, who
outscored the Mavericks 51-23 in the second half, evened their
record at 2-2 overall, while it was Mercy's season opener.
McDade finished 9-12 from the floor
and drained all five of her free throw attempts. She led four
Penmen in double figures as Libby Cullerot
(Henniker, N.H.) matched her career high with 11 points off the
bench. Sloane Sorrell (Berwick, Maine) and
Christine Duffy (South Boston, Mass.) each scored
10 points. Erin Baldwin (Fairhaven, Mass.)
added nine points, six rebounds and five assists for Southern New
Hampshire, while Ashara Carrington (Marblehead,
Mass.) scored nine points as well.
Delmara Reece led Mercy with 16
points and seven rebounds, while Simone Williams totaled 12 points
and Jasmine Williams 10 for the Mavericks.
SNHU broke open what had been a
33-29 lead at halftime by outscoring Mercy 16-1 over the first 3:44
of the second half to build a 49-30 lead on a basket by
McDade. The Penmen led by at least 17 points the rest of the
way and owned a 32-point lead on four occasions over the game's
final five minutes.
The first half saw 11 ties and a
pair of lead changes. Mercy owned an 11-7 with 12:19 to play
in the first half following a pair of Simone Williams free
throws. The Penmen would tie the game six times before using
a 6-0 spurt capped by a Duffy three with 4:41 remaining to take a
27-21 lead. The Mavericks scored the next six points to tie
the game with 3:01 left, but SNHU scored the final four points of
the first half and a basket by McDade with just under a minute left
made it 33-29 at the break.
SNHU shot a blistering 62.5%
(20-32) from the floor over the final 20 minutes while also
connecting on three of its six three-point attempts. For the
contest Southern New Hampshire was 52.4% (33-63) from the
field. The Penmen also limited Mercy to 31.3% shooting in the
second half and 36.5% for the game. SNHU also held a 44-33
rebounding advantage.
Southern New Hampshire opens
Northeast-10 play on Wednesday night when it hosts Saint Anselm
College in a 5:30 game at the SNHU Fieldhouse.
