Women's Basketball Downs Bentley in Overtime 70-63

BOX SCORE

WALTHAM, Mass. - Jenny McDade (Derry, N.H.) and Sloane Sorrell (Berwick, Maine) each totaled 19 points to lead Southern New Hampshire University to a 70-63 overtime win over Bentley University in Northeast-10 women's basketball Sunday afternoon at the Dana Center.  The Penmen improved to 4-3 overall and 2-1 in the NE-10, while the Falcons are now 4-2 and 2-1 in the league.

The win marks SNHU's third-ever win over Bentley, as the Falcons hold a 26-3 lead in the all-time series against the Penmen.  It is the first Southern New Hampshire win over Bentley since the 2005-06 season.

McDade was 6-13 from the floor and also grabbed 10 rebounds while dishing out five assists, while Sorrell, a freshman, was 8-11 from the field.  She totaled 13 of her points in the second half and overtime.  Ashara Carrington (Marblehead, Mass.) had 18 points and seven rebounds, while Christine Duffy (South Boston, Mass.) added eight points and five assists.

Kim Brennan led Bentley with 23 points, while Elisa Caira added 16 points and 13 boards for the Falcons.

Southern New Hampshire never trailed in overtime, opening the scoring on a conventional three-point play by Sorrell with 3:59 left.  Carrington put the Penmen ahead for good with a three-point play of her own with 1:55 left that made it 64-61.  Bentley would come up empty on its next three trips, and a layup by Carrington with 39 seconds to play made it 66-61.

SNHU took a 52-47 lead with 3:05 left on a basket by McDade that capped a 6-0 spurt.  The Penmen held a 56-53 lead late when Bentley came down, and an initial three by Kelsey Roberson was off the mark.  The Falcons controlled the rebound and after a timeout, Bentley's Meghan Thomann was fouled shooting a three.  She sank all three with 5.5 seconds left to tie the game 56-56.  The Penmen could not get a shot off in the remainder of regulation.

The guests used an 8-2 run to turn a 35-34 deficit to a 42-37 lead with just over nine minutes to play following a basket by Duffy.  The Falcons countered with eight unanswered points to take a 45-42 lead with 6:55 to go on a Brennan basket.  Sorrell scored four straight points to reclaim the lead for the Penmen with 6:18 on the clock.

In a first half that saw six ties and eight lead changes, Bentley opened a 10-4 lead 3:26 into the game.  The Penmen scored seven points in the next minute and a Carrington layup gave the Penmen their first lead of the game at 11-10.  SNHU took their largest lead of the first half, 23-20, with 9:25 left in the half on a basket by Erin Baldwin (Fairhaven, Mass.).  The Falcons closed the half with five unanswered points to take a 33-29 halftime lead.

Southern New Hampshire held Bentley to just 25.6% (10-39) shooting in the second half and overtime and 30.7% for the game.  The Penmen were 11-22 from the field in the second half and 4-8 in the extra session.  SNHU was 15-17 at the free throw line, while both teams grabbed 43 rebounds.

Southern New Hampshire returns to action Wednesday night when it hosts Saint Michael's College in a 5:30 game at the SNHU Fieldhouse.
