Hampshire University in day two action at the Disney Division II
Tip Off Saturday. Both teams saw their record evened at 1-1
on the season.
Gardner went 10-19 from the floor
and was one of three Raiders in double figures. Lauren
Beckley finished with 16 points and nine rebounds, while Morgan
Taylor also added 16 points.
Senior Jenny
McDade (Derry, N.H.) led Southern New Hampshire with 17
points and nine rebounds, while Ashara Carrington
(Marblehead, Mass.) recorded a double-double with 12 points and 11
rebounds. Erin Baldwin (Fairhaven, Mass.)
went 6-9 from the floor and totaled a career-best 12 points, while
Sloane Sorrell (Berwick, Maine) totaled 10 points
and seven rebounds in just 17 minutes as she was plagued by foul
trouble.
Southern New Hampshire jumped out
to a 12-4 lead four and a half minutes into the game following a
fast-break layup by Carrington, but the Raiders would score nine
unanswered points to take a 13-12 lead on a Beckley basket with
11:16 left in the first half. The teams traded the lead twice
before Shippensburg went on a 14-0 run to take a 27-14 lead with
7:30 left on a Beckley three-pointer. The Penmen used a late
9-2 run to cut the lead to four, 34-30 with 19 seconds left in the
first period on a basket by Morgan Munson
(Rockhampton, Queensland, Australia) and that would remain the
halftime score.
The Penmen cut the Raider advantage
to one twice in the early part of the second half, with a basket by
Baldwin with 12:47 to go making it 44-43. Shippensburg
countered with an 8-0 spurt to make it 52-43 with 9:32 to
play. SNHU cut the lead to three three times the rest of the
way, the last time on a pair of Libby Cullerot
(Henniker, N.H.) free throws with 43 seconds left that made it
63-60, but the Penmen would get no closer.
Shippensburg outrebounded Southern
New Hampshire 40-36 and limited the Penmen to just 37.9% shooting
for the contest, including a 2-for-16 effort behind the arc.
The Raiders connected on four of their 11 three-point attempts in
the first half, but missed all four tries behind the arc over the
final 20 minutes.
SNHU closes out the Disney Division
II Tip Off Sunday when it plays No. 19 Gannon University in a 10:00
am contest.
