LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - No. 19 Gannon University
jumped out to a 44-31 halftime lead and posted a 79-65 women's
basketball victory over Southern New Hampshire University in the
Disney Division II Tip Off Sunday morning. The Golden Knights
improved to 3-0 with the win, while the Penmen fall to 1-2 on the
season.
Kristina Freeman led Gannon with 21
points, four assists and four steals, while Carrie Nolan was 7-11
from the floor and totaled 18 points. Brittany Tabron and
Shanna Thompson finished with 10 points apiece.
Jenny McDade
(Derry, N.H.) led Southern New Hampshire with 16 points on 7-14
shooting and also grabbed five rebounds. Sloane
Sorrell (Berwick, Maine) was a perfect 6-6 from the field
and finished with 14 points, while Libby Cullerot
(Henniker, N.H.) connected on a pair of three pointers and scored
10 points. Ashara Carrington (Marblehead,
Mass.) added nine points and nine rebounds.
SNHU held a 6-2 lead 2:11 into the
game, but the Golden Knights would take control with an 11-4 run to
take a 23-15 lead with 8:14 left in the first half on a layup by
Kim Vargas. The Penmen would cut the lead to five with 4:42
before intermission on a McDade bucket, but Gannon would close on a
15-7 run and took a 44-31 lead into the locker room.
Gannon outscored Southern New
Hampshire 13-4 over the first 5:21 of the second half to build a
22-point lead at 57-35. The Penmen would get the lead down to
10, 72-62, with 3:32 to play when Christine Duffy
(South Boston, Mass.) sank a pair of free throws, but would get no
closer.
McDade was named to the
All-Tournament Team for Southern New Hampshire.
Southern New Hampshire opens its
home schedule on Sunday, November 15, when it hosts Mercy College
in a 1:30 contest at the SNHU Fieldhouse.
