Women's Basketball Shuts Down Saint Michael's

BOX SCORE

MANCHESTER, N.H. - Freshman Sloane Sorrell (Berwick, Maine) totaled 15 points and 12 rebounds to lead Southern New Hampshire University to a 53-35 Northeast-10 women's basketball victory over Saint Michael's College at the SNHU Fieldhouse Wednesday night.  The Penmen improved to 5-3 overall and 3-1 in the NE-10, while the Purple Knights are now 2-3 and 1-3 in the league.  SNHU has its best record after eight games since the 1990-91 season.

Sorrell finished 7-10 from the floor and also registered two blocks and a pair of steals.  Jenny McDade (Derry, N.H.) added 10 points and five rebounds, while Christine Duffy (South Boston, Mass.) registered nine points, six assists and four boards.  Ashara Carrington (Marblehead, Mass.) notched seven points.

Alexis Keller led Saint Michael's with eight points, with all eight of her points coming at the free throw line, while Correen Hennessy and Meghan McCormack added five points apiece.  Logan Pintka, the Purple Knights' leading scorer entering the game, was held to just three points as she was 0-13 from the floor.

The Penmen held the Purple Knights to just 16.4% (9-55) shooting for the game.  It marks the second time this season Southern New Hampshire has held a team to 35 points or less this season, as the Pennmen posted a 53-33 win over Saint Anselm two weeks ago.  SNHU also held a 42-39 rebounding advantage.

Southern New Hampshire trailed just once, 3-2, 45 seconds into the game, and the Penmen would open up a 17-7 lead with 11:49 left in the first half following a conventional three-point play by Carrington.  The Penmen, who held the Purple Knights to just four field goals in the first half, including one in the final 9:17 of the frame, used an 8-0 run to open up a 27-10 lead on a putback by Andrea Lozeau (Pelham, N.H.) with 5:04 left.  SNHU took a 32-17 lead into the locker room following a three-pointer by Libby Cullerot (Henniker, N.H.) at the buzzer.

The Penmen extended their lead to 40-21 4:45 into the second half on a layup by Carrington, their largest lead of the game.  Saint Michael's would try to climb back into the game by holding SNHU to one point in an 11-minute span, and a pair of free throw by Keller with 6:03 left made it 41-30.  The Purple Knights, however, would get no closer, hitting just one three-pointer and a pair of free throws the rest of the way.

Southern New Hampshire travels to No. 21 Stonehill College for a 1:30 contest on Saturday.
