OAKDALE, N.Y. - Jenny
McDade (Derry, N.H.) totaled 13 points and 12 rebounds as
the Southern New Hampshire University Penmen topped the Purple
Knights of the University of Bridgeport Wednesday afternoon during
the final day of the Dowling Classic tournament. With the
win, the Penmen better their record to 8-5 overall, while
Bridgeport suffers their second loss of the season and falls
to 7-2.
In addition to McDade, the Penmen were led by Sloane
Sorrell (Berwick, Maine) who scored 14 points and
collected five rebounds and Ashara Carrington
(Marblehead, Mass.), who totaled 12 points and seven
rebounds. Libby Cullerot (Henniker, N.H.)
scored nine points on 3-8 shooting from behind the three-point
line.
The Purple Knights were led by Ana-Marie Kammer, who totaled 14
points, and Emma Beddome, who scored nine points and collected six
rebounds.
The Penmen would start the game taking a 14-2 advantage with
15:18 left in the half. With six minutes remaining, the
Penmen would increase their advantage to 28-12 on a layup by
Andrea Lozeau (Pelham, N.H.). At halftime, the
Penmen would hold a 31-22 lead.
Bridgeport would close the lead to seven points in the opening
minutes of the second half, but the Penmen answered with a
three-point basket by Cullerot to extend the lead back into
double-digits, where it would remain until the 10:40 mark when
Bridgeport's Sidney Parson would hit a layup to cut the lead to
eight. That would be the closest the game would get in the
final stretch, as the Penmen would claim a 15-point advantage with
just under three minutes left to play on a free-throw by
Carrington. A free-throw by Sorrell with 0:49 remaining would
give the Penmen a 61-45 advantage. Bridgeport would answer
with a three-point basket by Kammer, but with seconds left, the
Penmen would finish with the 61-48 lead.
SNHU shot 43.6% from the floor, while holding Bridgeport to only
30.3% from field goal range. The Penmen also connected on
28.6% of their three-point attempts, again holding Bridgeport to
only 17.6%.
The Penmen will be back in action on Saturday, January 2 when
they host Franklin Pierce University in a 1:30 conference matchup
at the SNHU Fieldhouse.
