Cullerot (Henniker, N.H.) and Sloane
Sorrell (Berwick, Maine) each finished with a career-high
20 points as Southern New Hampshire University recorded a 82-67
Northeast-10 women's basketball win over Merrimack College Tuesday
night at the SNHU Fieldhouse. The Penmen, who won their sixth
in a row at home dating back to last season, improved to 6-4 and
4-2 in the NE-10, while the Warriors are now 2-7 and 1-5 in the
league.
Cullerot, a junior, connected on
six of her eight three-point attempts and was 7-10 overall from the
floor. Sorrell, a freshman, also grabbed a career-best 13
rebounds as she was 9-12 from the floor. Jenny
McDade (Derry, N.H.) added 18 points and seven rebounds
for the Penmen, while Magdala Johnson (Sandown,
N.H.) and Megan Spanarkel (Tinton Falls, N.J.)
each totaled seven points. Christine Duffy
(South Boston, Mass.) handed out seven assists and did not commit a
turnover.
Casey Miller led four Merrimack
players in double figures with 17 points, while Taneka Brown added
12 points. Gennifer Roy scored 11 points before fouling out,
while Tiffany Colon notched 10 points.
The two teams traded the lead four
times in the opening minutes before Southern New Hampshire took
control with a 10-0 run capped by a Morgan Munson
(Rockhampton, Queensland, Australia) layup at the 13:31 mark that
made it 17-9. Cullerot canned a pair of three-pointers during
the run. The Penmen took their largest lead of the first
half, 31-18, with 3:20 left on a three by Deborah
LaValley (Rochester, N.H.), but Merrimack responded with
10 unanswered points and cut the lead to three with nine seconds
left before the break on a Miller three. McDade nailed a
three-pointer at the buzzer to put SNHU up 34-28 at halftime.
SNHU opened the second half on a
10-4 run to take a 44-32 lead with just over 17 minutes to play on
a three by Erin Baldwin (Fairhaven, Mass.).
The Penmen would maintain a double-digit advantage the rest of the
way, taking their largest lead with 2:54 to play on a pair of free
throws by Johnson.
The Penmen held the Warriors to
33.3% shooting in the first half and 34.8% for the game and
outrebounded their guests 45-44. Southern New Hampshire
drained a season-high 10 three-pointers and saw nine of the 10
players who appeared in the game record at least two points.
Southern New Hampshire is idle
until Sunday, December 20, when it hosts Assumption College in a
1:00 non-league game at the SNHU Fieldhouse.
