MANCHESTER, N.H. - Laechia Conley scored 16 of her
team-high 18 points in the second half as American International
College scored the game's final 14 points en route to a 59-57
Northeast-10 women's basketball win over Southern New Hampshire
University Saturday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets improve to
18-9 and 13-6 in the NE-10, while the Penmen are now 14-10 and 9-10
in the league.
Conley was 8-13 from the floor in
the second half and 9-17 for the game. Kristin Boesenberg was
8-8 at the free throw line and totaled 14 points while Stacy
Boisvert added 11 points and eight rebounds.
Julia Houghtaling
(Franconia, NH) led Southern New Hampshire with 18 points on 6-10
shooting. Stephanie Houghton (Manchester,
NH) connected on three three-pointers and totaled 11 points, five
rebounds and three assists, while Ashara
Carrington (Marblehead, MA) had nine points on 4-6
shooting. Alyssa Whitney (Somerville, MA)
added eight points.
Southern New Hampshire held a 52-38
lead with 6:24 to play and was up 57-45 with 4:38 left following a
three from the left corner from Jenny McDade
(Derry, NH). The Yellow Jackets started their run with 3:43
left when Boisvert made 1-of-2 at the free throw line.
AIC got threes from Michelle DeRoma
at the 2:23 mark and a triple from Boesenberg with 1:41 to play to
cut the lead to one, 57-56. The Penmen came up empty on their
next trip and Boisvert would be fouled going to the basket with 51
seconds to play. She made both free throws to give the Yellow
Jackets their first lead of the second half. The Penmen
turned it over with 40 seconds left, but got the ball back as AIC
ran down the clock, with a three by Jeannette Johnathan off the
mark.
The Penmen turned the ball over on
their next possession and were forced to foul Sasha Lowery with 5.2
seconds left. She made 1-of-2 at the line. SNHU called
timeout, and got the ball to Houghton, whose 30-footer as time
expired was off the mark.
SNHU led 24-17 at halftime but AIC
got the lead down to one, 30-29, with 12:40 left on a Conley
basket. The Penmen held a 39-36 lead with just over 10
minutes to play when they went on a 13-2 run to go up 52-38 with
6:24 left on a pair of Houghtaling free throws.
The Penmen held American
International to just one field goal over the final 10:31 of the
first half and used a 9-0 run capped by a three by Whitney with
3:41 left before halftime to take a 24-15 lead. SNHU led
24-17 at halftime.
Southern New Hampshire limited AIC
to just 37% shooting, including 26.9% in the first half, but was
outrebounded 35-31 and plagued by 22 turnovers that lead to a
24-12 Yellow Jacket edge in points off turnovers. American
International also made eight more trips to the free throw line,
going 14-22 at the stripe while SNHU was 12-14.
Southern New Hampshire returns to
action on Wednesday night when it travels to the University of New
Haven for a 5:30 contest.
