Barry Takes Two From Softball

GAME 1 BOX SCORE     GAME 2 BOX SCORE

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. - Host Barry University swept a softball doubleheader from Southern New Hampshire University on Monday evening.  The Buccaneers recorded a walkoff 1-0 win in the opener, while posting an 8-0, five inning victory in the nightcap.  Barry improves to 20-9 overall, while the Penmen are now 2-6 on the season.

In the opener, SNHU pitchers Kelsey Griffin (Scarborough, ME) and Amanda Barton (Franklin NH) carried a combined no-hitter into the seventh, with Griffin working the first four innings and Barton the fifth and sixth.  The no-hit bid was broken up when Jessica Tabor led off the frame with a single to left.  Tabor would be lifted for pinch runner Cassy Zamora, and Zamora would move to third on a sacrifice bunt by Amanda Goelz.  The next batter, Natalie Heeley, singled to the left side to plate Zamora.

The Penmen would have just four baserunners in the game, with none advancing past first.  Nicole Arpin (Cheshire, CT) singled to lead off the sixth, but she would be thrown out trying to steal second.  The other SNHU hits were singles by Melissa Vitagliano (Bedford, NH) in the second and Ashley Bernstein (Stoughton, MA) with one out in the seventh.

Griffin faced just one batter over the minimum in three innings, walking one while also recording a strikeout.  Barton, who took the loss, worked 3.1 innings and allowed two hits.  Barry hurler Amber Jack struck out 12 without walking a batter in a complete-game victory.

In game two, the Penmen got just one hit, a single by Melissa Loughran (East Rockaway, NY) to lead off the third inning.  The Buccaneers got four runs in the second, one in the third and three more in the fourth to invoke the run rule.  Kyla Puccini (North Dighton, MA) and Bernstein each pitched two innings.

Southern New Hampshire returns to action Tuesday with a 2:00 doubleheader at Lynn.
