COLCHESTER, Vt. - Senior Val Martins
(Somerset, MA) batted a combined 5-8 and drove in four runs as
Southern New Hampshire University swept Saint Michael's College in
a Northeast-10 softball doubleheader by scores of 5-3 and 4-2
Tuesday afternoon. The Penmen improved to 4-10 overall and
2-0 in the NE-10 with the wins, while the Purple Knights are now
4-14 and 0-8 in the league.
In the opener, SNHU trailed 3-2
entering the sixth inning but tied the game in the sixth then
scored two more times in the seventh. In the sixth,
Ashley
Bernstein (Stoughton, MA) worked a leadoff walk.
Pinch runner Megan Renning
(Enosburg Falls, VT) replaced Bernstein and would score on a
groundout by Melissa
Vitagliano (Bedford, NH). In the seventh,
Martins would deliver the winning runs with a two-run homer that
also scored Nicole
Arpin (Cheshire, CT). Arpin led off the seventh
with a double.
Saint Michael's scored in the
first, but Vitagliano would tie the score with a solo home run in
the second. SNHU's other run came in the fourth when a single
by Arpin plated Michelle Maranto
(Hampstead, NH).
Martins was 3-4 at the plate in the
opener while Arpin was 2-3 as SNHU outhit Saint Michael's
9-5. Kelsey Griffin (Scarborough, ME) earned the win on the
mound for the Penmen, working five innings of scoreless relief and
allowing just two hits while striking out seven.
In the nightcap, the Penmen rallied
from a 2-1 deficit with three runs in the top of the seventh.
Griffin led off the inning with a single, then the next batter,
Arpin, reached on an error. The pair would come home on a
two-run double off the bat of
Martins. Martins would later score on a
single by Maranto.
SNHU's other run came in the second
to give the Penmen a 1-0 lead. Bernstein led off with a
single and would come home on a base hit by Vitagliano.
The Purple Knights would take the lead with single runs in the
fourth and fifth innings.
Martins, Bernstein and Melissa
Pessotti (Burlington, MA) each had two hits apiece for
SNHU as it outhit Saint Michael's 10-4. Bernstein also earned
the pitching victory with a complete-game effort, striking out
four.
Southern New Hampshire returns to
action Thursday when it entertains New Haven in a 3:00 doubleheader
at Penmen Field.
