MANCHESTER, N.H. - Visiting American International
College posted a pair of one-run victories, 3-2 and 4-3, en route
to a Northeast-10 softball doubleheader sweep of Southern New
Hampshire University at Penmen Field Friday afternoon. The
Yellow Jackets improve to 17-13 and 9-7 in the NE-10, while the
Penmen are now 10-16 and 8-6 in the league.
In the opener, AIC staked itself to
a 2-0 lead in the first. A sacrifice fly by Tara DeMontier
scored Michelle Franey, while Deanna Zanetti scored on a single by
Sarah Calgreen. DeMontier would make it a 3-0 game in the
sixth when she homered to center.
SNHU would score twice in the
bottom of the seventh but couldn't push the tying run across.
Ashley
Bernstein (Stoughton, MA) and Nicole Arpin
(Cheshire, CT) led off the inning with back-to-back doubles to get
the Penmen on the board, and after an out, Michelle
Maranto (Hampstead, NH) singled to left to score
Arpin. Arpin would remain stranded as the final two batters
flied out.
DeMontier and Deanna Zanetti each
had a pair of hits to pace AIC, while Kristen Dolan scattered seven
hits and struck out eight to earn the win. Maranto had two of
SNHU's seven hits, while Bernstein took the loss for the Penmen,
allowing seven hits while fanning three.
SNHU took a 1-0 lead in the first
as Maranto led off the game for the Penmen with a home run.
The Yellow Jackets would claim the lead in the second by scoring
twice. DeMontier led off with a walk and later scored on a
double steal, while Nicole Benoit would score on a single by
Ashleigh St. Peter. AIC would tack on solo runs in the sixth
and seventh to make it 4-1.
Arpin made it a 4-3 game with two
outs in the seventh when she belted a two-run home run that also
scored Valerie
Martins (Somerset, MA), but the Penmen would not get
another baserunner.
Kellie Brown had two hits and a
pair of RBI in the nightcap for AIC. Yellow Jacket hurler
Ashley Deegan earned the win, working 5.1 innings and fanning three
while allowing four hits. Sarah Puglisi picked up the
save. Kelsey Griffin
(Scarborough, ME) took the loss for Southern New Hampshire,
scattering six hits and allowing three earned runs while fanning
five.
Southern New Hampshire returns to
action Saturday when it hosts C.W. Post in a noon non-league
doubleheader.
