Pioneers Post Pair of Softball Victories

MANCHESTER, N.H. - Visiting C.W. Post swept a softball doubleheader from Southern New Hampshire University by scores of 6-2 and 5-2 Saturday afternoon at Penmen Field.  The Pioneers improved to 23-11 overall with the wins, while the Penmen are now 10-18 overall.

In the opener, the Pioneers took a 1-0 lead in the second then scored two more times in the third on a two-run home run by Christie Softy.  Softy would homer again in the fifth and C.W. Post also had single runs in the sixth and seventh.  The Penmen got their two runs in the bottom of the sixth.  A single by Karissa Bettencourt (Norton, MA) drove in Amanda Barton (Franklin, NH), while Elena Anderson (Salem, WI) drove in pinch-runner Rachel Dobinski (Hopkinton, MA) with a single.  Dobinski was running for Melissa Vitagliano (Bedford, NH), who singled.

Christina Berardi earned the win for C.W. Post, allowing six hits while fanning four.  Ashley Bernstein (Stoughton, MA) surrendered 12 hits and struck out for in a complete-game effort for the Penmen.

C.W. Post jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first of the nightcap, but a solo home run by Vitagliano in the bottom of the frame tied the game.  The Pioneers reclaimed the lead in the second when Katie Fisher scored on a passed ball, but the Penmen would tie the game in the fourth when Andrea Clausi (Kingston, NY) scored on a single by Valerie Martins (Somerset, MA).

Softy would homer two more times, delivering a two-run blast in the fifth and a solo shot in the seventh to give the guests a 5-2 lead.  The Penmen would mount a two-out rally in the bottom of the seventh, with Barton reaching on an infield single and Nicole Arpin (Cheshire, CT) singling to left.  Vitagliano would then lift a shot to center that had a chance to tie the game, but the ball was brought back over the fence by Pioneer center fielder Melissa Medina.

Arpin and Martins each had two hits for SNHU in the nightcap as the Penmen outhit the Pioneers 10-9.  Kyla Puccini (North Dighton, MA) took the loss for SNHU, allowing nine hits and registering a pair of strikeouts in a complete-game effort.

Southern New Hampshire returns to Northeast-10 play Monday when it travels to Franklin Pierce for a 3:00 twinbill.
