EASTON, Mass. - Southern New Hampshire University and
Stonehill College split a Northeast-10 softball doubleheader
Thursday afternoon. The Penmen posted a 2-0 shutout victory
in the opener before the Skyhawks recorded an 8-7 win in the
nightcap. SNHU is now 14-20 overall and 12-8 in the NE-10,
while Stonehill is 10-18 and 10-6 in the league.
Southern New Hampshire would get
the only offense of game one in the top of the second inning when
Melissa Pessotti (Burlington, MA) delivered a
two-run home run to left-center that also scored Elena
Anderson (Salem, WI). Pessotti would finish with two
of the Penmen's five hits in the game.
Kelsey Griffin
(Scarborough, ME) earned the win for SNHU, striking out 11 to move
to 5-2 on the season. Griffin allowed just four hits, not
allowing a hit until Meghan Sheehy singled with two away in the
fourth, and only allowed one runner past first base. Samantha
Kratz took the loss for Stonehill, striking out six and only
allowing one hit over the final five innings.
SNHU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in
the top of the first of game two, with Karissa
Bettencourt (Norton, MA) singling to score the game and
scoring on a single by Ashley Bernstein
(Stoughton, MA). Bernstein would score when the next batter,
Andrea Clausi (Kingston, NY), doubled to right.
Stonehill would plate a run in the
first then would score six times in the second, utilizing four
hits, an error and a walk. The big hit would come when
Courtney Young belted a three-run home run to make it 6-2, and the
Skyhawks would lead 7-2 at the end of the frame. Stonehill
tacked on another run in the fourth to make it 8-2.
Melissa Vitagliano
(Bedford, NH) led off the fifth with a home run, then the Penmen
would score three times in the sixth, with Bettencourt delivering a
two-run single. Bernstein would homer with one out and nobody
on in the seventh to pull Southern New Hampshire within a run, but
the guests would get no closer.
Bernstein and Clausi each finished
with three hits in the nightcap, while Bettencourt recorded a pair
of hits. Bernstein also started on the mound and went 1.2
innings, allowing seven runs (two earned), before being replaced by
Kyla Puccini (North Dighton, MA). Puccini
allowed five hits in 4.1 innings of work.
Southern New Hampshire returns to
action Saturday when it hosts Molloy College for a 1:00
doubleheader at Penmen Field.
