MANCHESTER, N.H. - Southern New Hampshire University swept
a Northeast-10 softball doubleheader from the University of New
Haven by scores of 1-0 and 2-1 Thursday afternoon at Penmen
Field. The Penmen, who were playing their home opener,
improved to 6-10 overall and 4-0 in the NE-10, while the Chargers
are now 11-9 and 4-4 in the league.
In game one, SNHU would score the
game's only run in the bottom of the first inning. Karissa
Bettencourt (Norton, MA) would lead the game off with
a single to left. After an out, Michelle Maranto
(Hampstead, NH) would reach when she laid down a sacrifice bunt,
but the throw to get her was wide. Bettencourt advanced to
third on the play. Maranto would attempt to steal second, but
the throw from New Haven catcher Nicole Downs sailed into center
field, allowing Bettencourt to score.
Ashley Bernstein
(Stoughton, MA) earned the win on the mound for the Penmen,
allowing just three hits while striking out four. Her UNH
counterpart, Breeana Gleason, allowed just one hit and struck out
five in a complete-game effort.
In the nightcap, New Haven took a
1-0 lead in the third. Chelsea Harold led off the frame with
a single and eventually scored from third when Jessica Medina hit a
soft bunt back to SNHU pitcher Amanda Barton
(Franklin, NH). Barton tried to get Harold at home but her
throw was late. New Haven would load the bases with two outs
later in the inning, but Penmen reliever Kelsey Griffin
(Sacrborough, ME) induced a flyout to right to end the threat.
The Penmen would tie the game in
the bottom of the fourth when Elena Anderson
(Salem, WI) lifted a solo home run to center field. SNHU's
other run would come in the fifth. Nicole Arpin
(Cheshire, CT) led off the inning with a single to center, and
after moving to second on a sacrifice by Bettencourt, scored on a
double down the right field line by Maranto.
Griffin earned her second win of
the year on the mound for Southern New Hampshire, allowing just two
hits in 4.1 innings of relief and striking out three. Gleason
worked two innings of relief and took the loss for the Chargers.
Southern New Hampshire returns to
action Saturday with a 1:00 doubleheader at Southern Connecticut
State University.
