MANCHESTER, N.H. - Mike Ball (Salem, NH) led 10 Southern
New Hampshire University goal scorers with six goals and four
assists to lead the Penmen to a 25-9 Northeast-10 men's lacrosse
victory over Franklin Pierce University Wednesday night. SNHU
has won four of its last six games and improves to 4-8 overall and
4-4 in the NE-10, while the Ravens are now 1-10 and 1-7 in the
league.
The win, which moved the Penmen
into a three-way tie for fourth in the NE-10 standings, was the
100th career victory for SNHU head coach Paul Calkins.
Ball totaled 10 points for the
second time in three games. Brother Sean
Ball (Salem, NH) added four goals and an assist for
SNHU. Dustin Latham (Penacook, NH) finished
with three goals and a pair of assists, while Terrence
Nash (Oceanside, NY) and Marc Novaco
(Chelmsford, MA) each notched three goals and an assist.
Keith Merluzzo (Billerica, MA) totaled two goals
and two assists, while Andrew Brown (Marshfield,
MA), Nick Zuccala (Manchester, NH), James
Sabino (Danvers, MA) and Matt Sowles
(Cumberland, ME) each netted single goals. It marked the
first collegiate goals for Zuccala and Sabino.
Jack Scanlan led Franklin Pierce
with three goals and an assist, while Ryan Boller and Jason
Flanagan each scored twice.
SNHU never trailed, but the Penmen
and Ravens traded the game's first four goals before the hosts ran
off four unanswered to take a 6-2 lead with 2:14 left in the first
quarter on a Mike Ball goal. Southern New Hampshire led 6-3
after one quarter and 12-6 at halftime. Franklin Pierce
scored the first goal of the third quarter to cut it to 12-7, but
SNHU scored four goals in a span of 59 seconds and a Novaco tally
with 10:32 left in the third quarter made it 16-7. The Penmen
led 20-9 at the end of the third quarter, then scored all five
goals of the fourth.
Brendan O'Brien
(Hopkinton, MA) made nine saves over the first three quarters in
goal before giving way to Eric Gunst (Exeter, NH),
who did not allow a goal and made one stop. Shea Campbell
made 15 saves for Franklin Pierce as the Penmen outshot the Ravens
56-27. SNHU faceoff man Gary McKay
(Billerica, MA) won 34 of 38 faceoffs and collected 22
ground balls.
SNHU closes out the regular season
when it hosts top-ranked Le Moyne College Saturday in a 1:00
contest.
