MANCHESTER, N.H. - Kyla Puccini (North Dighton, MA) fired
a complete game two-hitter for Southern New Hampshire University in
the nightcap of a Northeast-10 softball doubleheader with
Assumption College en route to a 4-0 win as the Penmen earned the
split. Assumption edged SNHU 3-2 in the opener.
Southern New Hampshire is now 17-21 overall and 13-9 in the NE-10,
while the Greyhounds are 16-23 and 10-13 in the league.
Puccini worked four 1-2-3 innings
in the win and only allowed a first inning single to Bernadette
Fuentes and a third inning single to Erin Murphy. She also
worked her way out a one-out, bases loaded jam in the fifth set up
by two walks and a hit by pitch, but Puccini would get Melissa
Bowman to foul out to third and Fuentes to ground out to first.
All four Penmen runs came on a pair
of home runs in the fourth. Elena Anderson
(Salem, WI) drove a ball just inside the foul pole down the left
field line that also scored Ashley Bernstein
(Stoughton, MA), who reached on a one-out double. The next
batter, Melissa Vitagliano (Bedford, NH) walked,
then Melissa Pessotti (Burlington, MA) made it 4-0
with a shot to center.
Dana Rizzo took the loss for
Assumption, allowing just four hits and striking out four but
getting harmed by five walks.
Karissa
Bettencourt (Norton, MA) gave SNHU a 1-0 lead in the first
inning of game one when she led off with a single. After
advancing on a passed ball and wild pitch, Bettencourt would score
on a sacrifice fly to right by Michelle Maranto
(Hampstead, NH). Assumption would score all three of its runs
in the third as it delivered four straight singles with two outs,
including a two-run single by Amy Gordon.
Maranto would halve the Greyhound
lead in the bottom of the third with a solo home run. SNHU's
best chance to tie the game came in the sixth when the Penmen had
Andrea Clausi (Kingston, NY) on third and Pessotti
on second with two outs after a Pessotti double. Assumption
pitcher Chelsea Durso would induce a SNHU groundout to end the
threat.
Bettencourt, Pessotti and
Nicole Arpin (Cheshire, CT) would each finish with
two hits in the opener for Southern New Hampshire, which outhit
Assumption 9-7. Kelsey Griffin (Scarborough, ME) took the
loss, scattering seven hits while fanning five.
Southern New Hampshire returns to
action Friday when it travels to Merrimack College for a 3:00
doubleheader.
