MANCHESTER, N.H. -
In the first home night games in program history, the Southern New
Hampshire University softball team split a Northeast-10
doubleheader with No. 23 Le Moyne College Saturday night. The
Penmen took a 4-3 win in the opener, while the Dolphins posted a
10-3 win in the nightcap. SNHU, which clinched a berth in the
upcoming NE-10 Tournament with the split, is now 19-23 overall and
15-11 in the league, while Le Moyne, which saw a eight-game win
streak snapped, is now 32-10 and 20-4 in the league.
SNHU's Penmen Field was outfitted
with temporary lights for the twinbill, marking the first time the
Penmen have played a home night game.
In the opener, Le Moyne got two
runs in the top of the first when Kelcie Cashel hit a two-run
single that plated Danielle VanGorder and Jennifer Farrelly.
The Dolphins would make it 3-0 in the second when a single to right
by Leah Ford scored Kate Waltman, who was pinch-running for Caitlin
O'Neill. O'Neill led off with a single down the left field
line.
Southern New Hampshire would score
all four of its runs in the fourth as the first six batters all
reached base. Valerie Martins (Somerset, MA)
led off with a single, then Nicole Arpin
(Cheshire, CT) reached when her sacrifice bunt attempt was
misplayed by Le Moyne. After Ashley
Bernstein (Stoughton, MA) walked, Melissa
Pessotti (Burlington, MA) singled to center to score
Martins.
Michelle Maranto
(Hampstead, NH) and Elena Anderson (Salem, WI)
then followed with back-to-back singles that plated Arpin and
Bernstein. Rachel Dobinski (Hopkinton, MA),
pinch-running for Pessotti, scored the go-ahead run when
Andrea Clausi (Kingston, NY) worked a bases-loaded
walk.
Anderson finished with two of
SNHU's six hits as the Penmen were outhit 10-6. Kyla
Puccini (North Dighton, MA) earned the win for the Penmen,
going 4.1 innings and allowing three runs (two earned) on eight
hits. Kelsey Griffin (Scarborough, ME)
worked the final 2.2 innings and allowed two hits while striking
out three to pick up the save.
In the nightcap, Le Moyne jumped
out to a 4-0 lead in the second then scored again in the third and
two more times in the fourth to build a 7-0 lead. The Penmen
would cut it to 7-3 in the fifth when Arpin delivered a three-run
triple to right. The Dolphins would reclaim a seven-run
advantage with three runs of their own in the top of the sixth.
Le Moyne outhit Southern New
Hampshire 11-4 in the nightcap while the Penmen also committed
three errors. Bernstein took the loss, working the first 5.1
innings.
Southern New Hampshire closes out
the regular season Sunday when it hosts The College of Saint Rose
in a noon doubleheader.
