MANCHESTER, N.H. - Southern New Hampshire University and
Saint Anselm College split a Northeast-10 softball doubleheader
Wednesday afternoon at Penmen Field. The Penmen took a 6-3
win in game one before Saint Anselm took a 2-1 win in the
nightcap. SNHU is now 10-12 overall and 8-2 in the
Northeast-10, while the Hawks are now 12-13-1 and 4-5-1 in the
league.
In the opener, Saint Anselm jumped
out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second on an bases-loaded
triple by Brittany Birch to the gap in right-center. SNHU
would tie the game in the fourth. Ashley Bernstein
(Stoughton, MA) would work a bases-loaded walk to score Elena Anderson
(Salem, WI), who led off the inning with a walk. The next
batter, Melissa
Vitagliano (Bedford, NH) singled up the middle to
score Melissa
Pessotti (Burlington, MA) and Andrea Clausi
(Kingston, NY).
The Penmen would then score three
times in the sixth. Karissa
Bettencourt (Norton, MA) led off with a single, then
Anderson would reach on a fielders' choice when Saint Anselm
unsuccessfully tried to throw out Bettencourt at second on
Anderson's sacrifice attempt. Pessotti would then belt a
three-run homer to right to give the Penmen a lead they would not
relinquish.
Saint Anselm would load the bases
with one out in the top of the seventh, but SNHU pitcher Bernstein
got Raylyn Glavin to ground into a 3-2-4 double play to end the
game.
Pessotti and Bernstein each had two
hits for Southern New Hampshire, which was outhit 9-7.
Bernstein struck out two in a complete-game effort to pick up the
win.
In the nightcap, Saint Anselm would
stake itself to a 2-0 lead in the top of the third on a mammoth
home run by Morgan Murphy. Meanwhile, Hawk pitcher Lisa
Caruso retired the first 12 batters she faced, carrying a perfect
game into the fifth before Anderson led off the fifth with an
infield single up the middle.
In the seventh, Anderson would get
a two-out rally started with a single through the left side.
Pessotti would walk, and be lifted for pinch-runner Andrea
Ouellette (Londonderry, NH). Bernstein would
then single to right, scoring Anderson, but Ouellette would be
thrown out at third trying to advance to third on the throw home.
Glavin, Murphy and Birch each had
two hits for Saint Anselm, while Caruso earned the win in a
complete-game effort. Kelsey Griffin
(Scarborough, ME) took the loss, allowing eight hits, but just one
in the final four innings, while striking out seven. Anderson
had two of SNHU's three hits in the nightcap.
Southern New Hampshire returns to
action Thursday when it travels to Bentley University for a 3:00
Northeast-10 doubleheader.
NOTES: With two
runs batted in in the doubleheader, Bernstein became SNHU's
all-time leader in RBI with 78, surpassing the 77 runs batted in by
Lynda Kent from 1984-87.
