BLOOMFIELD, Conn. - Buoyed by a
third-place finish by junior D.J. Lantz (New
London, N.H.), the Southern New Hampshire University golf team
opened its 2009-10 season at the New England Intercollegiate
Championship with a sixth place finish out of 17 schools at
Wintonbury Hills Country Club Sunday and Monday. The Penmen,
with a two-day score of 621, tied for sixth with Dowling College,
30 strokes behind tournament champion American International.
Lantz carded a 73 on Sunday then
followed up with a 72 on Monday to finish with a 145, one stroke
behind co-medalists Greg Strattner and Kevin Daniels of AIC.
Lantz tied his collegiate low round while establishing a new
36-hole low. He was one of three SNHU golfers to finish in
the top 20 of the 85-player field, as Shane
Winslow (Portsmouth, N.H.) finished in a tie for ninth
with a two-day score of 151. Jeff Newell
(Chicopee, Mass.), who fired a 75 on Sunday, finished with a
two-day score of 154 to place 19th. Winslow also
matched his career-best for 36 holes.
Nicholas Ricci
(Andover, Mass.) finished 68th with a two-day total of
171 while Jon Sawyer finished with a total of 194
to place 81st.
Southern New Hampshire returns to
action Saturday and Sunday when it competes at the Dartmouth
College Invitational at Hanover (N.H.) Country Club.
