MANCHESTER, N.H. - Johannah Leedham totaled 25
points, nine steals and seven rebounds to lead second-ranked
Franklin Pierce University to a 78-66 Northeast-10 women's
basketball victory over Southern New Hampshire University at the
SNHU Fieldhouse Saturday afternoon. The Ravens remained
unbeaten at 11-0 and 7-0 in the NE-10, while the Penmen, who
dropped their first home contest of the season, are now 8-6 and 4-3
in the league.
Leedham, who was 7-15 from the
floor, also added four assists and a pair of blocked shots.
Kirsten Doldoorian was 3-5 behind the arc and finished with 15
points off the bench, while Marielle Giroud added 10 points.
Ashara Carrington
(Marblehead, Mass.) led Southern New Hampshire with 18 points on
7-14 shooting while also grabbing six rebounds. Jenny
McDade (Derry, N.H.) totaled 16 points and seven rebounds,
while Sloane Sorrell (Berwick, Maine) and
Megan Spanarkel (Tinton Falls, N.J.) totaled 10
points apiece. The 10 points marked a career high for
Spanarkel.
Franklin Pierce jumped out to a
22-8 lead 9:19 into the game following a steal and layup by Alexis
Auffrey. The Penmen would counter with an 11-2 spurt that
featured a pair of three-pointers by McDade, and a conventional
three-point play by Magdala Johnson (Sandown,
N.H.) with 5:08 left before halftime made it a 28-23 game.
The guests closed out the first half on a 18-5 run over the final
3:22 and a layup by Leedham with 10 seconds left gave the Ravens a
49-30 halftime lead.
The Penmen would outscore the
Ravens 7-2 over the first 4:31 of the second half and a Carrington
free throw at the 15:29 mark pulled SNHU to within 14, 51-37.
Franklin Pierce scored the game's next six points to take a 57-37
lead, and took its largest lead, 71-48, with just under eight
minutes left on a Doldoorian basket. The Penmen would score
the final eight points of the contest with Erin
Baldwin's (Fairhaven, Mass.) jumper with just under a
minute left accounting for the final score.
Franklin Pierce was 17-27 (63%)
from the floor in the first half and 50.9% (27-53) overall for the
game while SNHU shot 50% in the first half and 45.3% for the
contest. The Penmen outrebounded the Ravens 33-30 but were
plagued by 25 turnovers, with FPU registering 18 steals.
Southern New Hampshire returns to
action Wednesday night when it travels to NE-10 newcomer Adelphi
University for a 5:30 contest.
