MANCHESTER, N.H. - Three players scored 11 points
apiece to lead Pace University to a 64-54 Northeast-10 women's
basketball victory over Southern New Hampshire University at the
SNHU Fieldhouse Wednesday night. The Setters improved to 12-5
overall and 9-3 in the Northeast-10, while the Penmen are now 9-10
and 5-7 in the league.
Laura Mooney, Allison Cleary and
Brittany Huggins each finished with 11 points for Pace, with Mooney
and Cleary each sinking all three of their three-point
attempts. Lisa Welsome added 10 points for the Setters.
Jenny McDade
(Derry, N.H.) led all scorers with 17 points for Southern New
Hampshire, going 7-12 from the floor and 3-4 behind the arc while
also grabbing six rebounds. McDade was limited to 24 minutes
due to foul trouble and scored 14 of her points in the first
half. Ashara Carrington (Marblehead, Mass.)
totaled 16 points off the bench on 7-11 shooting, while
Sloane Sorrell (Berwick, Maine) was 4-6 from the
floor and 7-11 at the free throw line en route to 15 points.
Southern New Hampshire trailed
44-36 with 12:11 to play following a Welsome three-pointer, but the
Penmen went on a 9-0 run, and a three by McDade with 8:51 left put
the Penmen on top 45-44, their first lead of the second half.
The two teams then traded the lead twice until the Setters took the
lead for good with 5:07 to play on a Welsome basket. Clinging
to a 55-52 lead, Pace would double its lead with 1:39 to play when
Mooney knocked down her third three of the game. Pace would
seal the win by sinking all six of its free throw attempts in the
final 1:06.
The Penmen jumped out to a 6-0 lead
1:30 into the game, but Pace would score the next six points to tie
the game. The hosts would reclaim a 9-6 advantage with 15:07
to go in the first half on a McDade three, but the Setters scored
the game's next 10 points to take a 16-9 lead with 12:14 left
before halftime on a Taylor Losey basket. The Penmen
countered with eight straight points of their own, and another
McDade three with 8:57 to go put SNHU on top 17-16. The two
teams would trade the lead four times the rest of the half, and a
McDade layup with 1:40 left gave Southern New Hampshire a 29-27
lead. Kristin Connolly would score 1:24 before intermission
for Pace to knot the game 29-29 at halftime.
Pace was 9-18 behind the
three-point arc for the game and also made nine of their 11 free
throw attempts. The Penmen, who outrebounded the Setters
32-30, shot 57.1% (12-21) in the opening 20 minutes but were just
8-22 from the floor in the second half, and were just 11-18 at the
free throw line and 3-11 behind the arc. Southern New
Hampshire was also plagued by 19 turnovers, which led to a 20-8
Pace edge in points off turnovers.
Southern New Hampshire hits the
road Saturday when it travels to Southern Connecticut State
University for a 1:30 Northeast-10 contest.
