NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Ashara
Carrington (Marblehead, Mass.) totaled 22 points and 10
rebounds as Southern New Hampshire University used a late run to
down Southern Connecticut State University 73-68 in Northeast-10
women's basketball at Moore Fieldhouse Saturday afternoon.
The Penmen, who snapped a four-game slide with the win, improved to
10-10 overall and 6-7 in the NE-10, while the Owls are 9-9 and 6-7
in the league.
Carrington totaled 15 of her points
in the second half and finished 7-10 from the floor and 8-10 at the
free throw line. It marked Carrington's second double-double
of the season. Jenny McDade (Derry, N.H.)
totaled 16 points on 6-11 shooting and grabbed six rebounds, while
Christine Duffy (South Boston, Mass.) was 2-4
behind the arc and totaled 12 points and three assists.
Sloane Sorrell (Berwick, Maine) added nine points,
while Andrea Lozeau (Pelham, N.H.) notched seven
points and three assists for Southern New Hampshire.
LaTisha Hatcher led Southern
Connecticut with 18 points off the bench on 8-11 shooting, while
Allyson Smith added 11 points.
In a game that saw eight ties and
10 lead changes, SNHU tied the game 60-60 with 2:59 left following
a layup by Sorrell. Hatcher would score on the next Owl trip
down the floor, but the Penmen would take the lead for good on a
three-pointer by Lozeau with 2:17 left that gave the guests a
63-62 lead.
Southern New Hampshire held a 65-64
lead with 1:28 to go before scoring the game's next six points to
open up a 71-64 advantage. The Penmen would get back-to-back
three-point plays from Carrington and Sorrell. Carrington
would be intentionally fouled on a made basket and made her free
throw, then Sorrell's three-point play came with 47 seconds
left. The Owls would cut the lead to 72-68 when Hatcher was
fouled on a good layup with 26 seconds to go. She missed the
free throw, but SCSU would control the offensive rebound and got
three looks at the basket before the Penmen would get a defensive
team rebound.
Neither side led by more than four
points in the second half until the game's final moments. The
Owls, who led 36-34 at halftime, had a 38-34 lead early in the
frame, while the Penmen used an 8-2 run to build a 54-50 lead on a
Duffy layup with nine minutes to play. Southern Connecticut
countered with an 8-2 run of their own and took a 58-56 lead with
just over seven minutes remaining on a Jacqueline Johannes basket.
The two teams traded the lead three
times in the game's opening moments, but Southern Connecticut used
a 13-4 run to open up a 30-20 lead with 6:49 left in the first half
on a Smith free throw. The Penmen would close the half on a
10-2 run and a basket by McDade 19 seconds before intermission cut
the Owl lead to two, 36-34, at halftime.
Southern New Hampshire shot 52.3%
for the contest and took 19 more trips to the free throw line,
going 23-31 (74.5%) at the charity stripe while the Owls were 8-12
at the line. Southern Connecticut outrebounded the Penmen
30-28.
Southern New Hampshire returns to
action Tuesday night when it hosts New Haven in a 5:30 contest at
the SNHU Fieldhouse.
