MANCHESTER, N.H. - Dominique Stellmacher totaled
22 points and converted the game-winning layup as time expired in
overtime to lift the University of New Haven to a 67-65
Northeast-10 women's basketball victory over Southern New Hampshire
University Tuesday night at the SNHU Fieldhouse. The
Chargers, who won their second straight, improved to 9-10 and 7-7
in the NE-10, while the Penmen are 10-11 and 6-8 in the league.
Stellmacher finished 10-25 from the
floor and also grabbed six rebounds. Helin Marte led New
Haven with 26 points and 13 rebounds, going 12-12 at the free throw
line and 7-16 from the floor.
Ashara Carrington
(Marblehead, Mass.) led Southern New Hampshire with 21 points on
9-14 shooting while also pulling down five rebounds.
Sloane Sorrell (Berwick, Maine) totaled six of her
18 points in overtime and grabbed eight rebounds, while
Jenny McDade (Derry, N.H.) finished with 12
points, nine rebounds and five assists. Megan
Spanarkel (Tinton Falls, N.J.) added seven points off the
bench, while Christine Duffy (South Boston, Mass.)
handed out seven assists.
With 0.6 seconds remaining, New
Haven, following a timeout, inbounded at midcourt opposite the
benches. Jasmine Hardy threw a lob pass to Stellmacher, who
was cutting down the left side of the key. Stellmacher caught
the ball and laid it in for the game-winner.
Overtime saw four ties and a pair
of lead changes. SNHU took a 65-63 lead with 1:47 left
following a layup by Sorrell. On the next New Haven trip,
McDade would come up with a block of Marte and the Penmen
controlled the rebound. On the other end, Andrea
Lozeau (Pelham, N.H.) had a layup rim out and Marte
grabbed the rebound. Marte would be fouled going to the
basket and sank both free throws to tie the game with 50 seconds
left.
On the next Penmen possession,
Sorrell would miss and Marte grabbed the rebound with 30 seconds to
play. After a timeout, Stellmacher missed a jumper with six
seconds to go and Sorrell controlled the rebound, but the Penmen
would turn it over near midcourt to give the Chargers their final
chance.
Southern New Hampshire trailed
57-52 with 1:30 remaining in regulation following a Stellmacher
three from the left corner. Spanarkel would be fouled going
to the basket with 49 seconds left and made 1-of-2 at the
line. New Haven would turn the ball over in the backcourt on
a tieup by Carrington, and Duffy would convert a layup with 35
seconds left to make it a 57-55 game.
The Penmen chose not to foul and
Olivia DeMarco missed a three at the top of the key with 11 seconds
left, with Spanarkel grabbing the rebound. Following a
timeout, McDade would force overtime as time expired as she hit a
15-foot off-balance jumper from the right elbow.
The hosts led 31-26 at halftime and
took a 35-28 lead with 17:40 to play following a layup by
Sorrell. New Haven tied the game with 13:29 to go on a
Stellmacher basket, but the Penmen would score the next four points
and took a 46-42 lead on a Carrington bucket with 12:20 on the
clock. The Chargers scored the game's next seven points and a
pair of free throws by Marte with 9:50 left gave New Haven a 49-46
advantage.
The two teams traded the lead five
times in the game's first six minutes and eight times in the first
half. Southern New Hampshire took control of the frame with a
7-0 spurt capped by a McDade basket with 3:13 to play that gave the
hosts a 27-20 lead. The Penmen would take a 31-26 lead into
the locker room.
New Haven outrebounded the Penmen
45-42 and was 16-18 at the free throw line in the contest, as
opposed to SNHU's 7-11 effort. The Penmen committed 24
turnovers on the evening that led to a 26-8 Charger advantage in
points off turnovers.
Southern New Hampshire returns to
action Saturday when it travels to Assumption College for a 1:30
contest.
