GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - Senior Ashara
Carrington (Marblehead, Mass.) poured in a career-high 29
points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead Southern New Hampshire
University to a 65-53 win over Adelphi University in Northeast-10
women's basketball Wednesday night at the Center for Recreation and
Sports. The Penmen improved to 9-6 overall and 5-3 in the
NE-10, while the Panthers are now 2-10 and 0-8 in the league.
Carrington finished 13-20 from the
floor in 27 minutes off the bench and totaled 16 of her points in
the first half. Jenny McDade (Derry, N.H.)
totaled nine points and six rebounds for Southern New Hampshire,
while Libby Cullerot (Henniker, N.H.) and
Megan Spanarkel (Tinton Falls, N.J.) finished with
seven points apiece. Sloane Sorrell
(Berwick, Maine) added six points and seven boards for the Penmen.
Gina Giambanco led Adelphi with 19
points, while Theresa Foley totaled 14 points and 11
rebounds. The Penmen held AU leading scorer Ashley Caiafa
scoreless on the evening, as she was 0-6 from the floor in 16
minutes. Caiafa entered the game averaging 14.6 ppg.
Southern New Hampshire trailed
29-26 at halftime, but opened the second half on a 7-2 run and a
layup by McDade with 16:17 left gave the Penmen a 33-31 lead, their
first of the game. SNHU took the lead for good with just over
15 minutes to play when Carrington made 1-of-2 at the line to put
the guests up 36-35. The Penmen opened up a 47-39 lead with
9:52 left following a Cullerot basket.
The Panthers pulled within four,
48-44, with just under nine minutes left following a Giambanco
three, but Southern New Hampshire salted the game away with a 12-2
run to go up 60-46 with 3:44 to play on a basket by
Carrington. The Penmen maintained a double-digit advantage
the rest of the way.
Adelphi held the lead for all but
27 seconds of the first half and used a 13-3 run to open up a 29-17
lead with 3:37 left before halftime on a basket by Erika
Conte. SNHU closed the first half with nine unanswered points
of its own, and a basket by Carrington 44 seconds before
intermission made it 29-26 at the break.
Southern New Hampshire limited
Adelphi to just 34.4% shooting (22-69) for the game while shooting
52.4% (11-21) in the second half and 44.2% for the contest.
The Penmen overcame 19 turnovers by holding a 46-36 rebounding
advantage.
Southern New Hampshire returns to
action Sunday when it hosts American International College in a
1:30 contest at the SNHU Fieldhouse.
