MANCHESTER, N.H. - Kim Brennan totaled 21 points
and four assists to lead Bentley University to a 70-65 Northeast-10
women's basketball win over Southern New Hampshire University in
Northeast-10 women's basketball Saturday afternoon at the SNHU
Fieldhouse. The Falcons won their fourth in a row to improve
to 18-6 overall and 16-3 in the NE-10, while the Penmen are 12-14
and 8-11 in the league.
Brennan totaled 14 of her points in
the second half to lead four Falcons in double figures.
Colette Josey finished with 12 points, 12 rebounds and three
blocked shots, while Katherine Goodwin was 5-11 from the floor and
also finished with 12 points. Shatasia Kearse added 11 points
on the afternoon.
Ashara Carrington
(Marblehead, Mass.) once again led Southern New Hampshire as she
totaled 18 points, 13 of those coming in the second half. She
now has totaled 995 career points. Jenny
McDade (Derry, N.H.) registered her eighth double-double
of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while
Christine Duffy (South Boston, Mass.) recorded 11
points, seven rebounds and three assists. Deborah
LaValley (Rochester, N.H.) knocked down a pair of
three-pointers and finished with eight points.
In a second half that saw 12 lead
changes and six ties, Southern New Hampshire took a 65-64 lead with
2:11 left on a pair of McDade free throws. The Falcons would
take the lead with 47.9 seconds left when Brennan drove to the
basket and converted a layup. On the other end, Carrington
would have a shot blocked by Josey, but the Penmen retained
possession. SNHU could not get another shot off before the
shot clock expired.
Brennan would make two at the line
with 14 seconds left. McDade got an open look at a three, but
was off the mark, and Elise Caira would seal the win with a pair of
free throws with 3.5 seconds left.
After the game was tied 32-32 at
halftime, Bentley opened up a 40-36 lead with 17:05 to play on a
Josey putback. The Penmen used an 11-2 run to build a
six-point advantage, 54-48, with 11:41 left on a layup by
Erin Baldwin (Fairhaven, Mass.). The Falcons
countered with a 6-0 spurt to tie the game on a Josey basket at the
7:18 mark. The two teams would then trade the lead eight
times down the stretch, with neither team leading by more than
three points.
Southern New Hampshire jumped out
to a 9-2 lead six minutes into the game. Bentley took its
first lead since it led 2-0 with 2:39 left before halftime on a
three-point play by Kearse, and the Falcons used a 6-0 spurt to
open up a 32-26 lead with just over a minute to play. The
Penmen score six unanswered points over the final minute, including
a pair of baskets by Duffy in the final 13 seconds, to tie the game
at intermission.
The Penmen were 14-27 (51.9%) from
the field in each half and made four of its 11 three-point attempts
while Bentley was 0-8 behind the arc. The Falcons made 11
more trips to the free throw line and were 16-of 19 at the stripe
while Southern New Hampshire was 5-8. Bentley, which was
outrebounded 36-28, turned 26 SNHU turnovers into 32 points, while
the Falcons only committed 12 turnovers.
Southern New Hampshire returns to
action Wednesday night when it travels to Saint Michael's College
for a 5:30 contest.
