COLCHESTER, Vt. - Alexis Keller totaled 22 points
and hit the game-winning layup with 0.4 seconds left to lift Saint
Michael's College to a 75-74 Northeast-10 women's basketball win
over Southern New Hampshire University at the Ross Sports Center
Wednesday night. The Purple Knights improved to 8-15 and 6-14
in the NE-10, while the Penmen are now 12-15 and 8-12 in the
league.
SNHU senior Ashara
Carrington (Marblehead, Mass.) became the 13th
SNHU player to reach the 1,000-point mark for her career with her
layup with 9:22 left in the first half. She finished with 20
points and now has 1,015 career points,
Keller finished 8-17 from the floor
and also handed out seven assists. Meghan McCormack was 5-8
from the floor and recorded 12 points off the bench, while Caitlin
Quinn was 3-6 behind the arc and added 11 points for the Purple
Knights.
Carrington finished 9-14 from the
floor for the Penmen and also grabbed eight rebounds.
Jenny McDade (Derry, N.H.) and Sloane
Sorrell (Berwick, Maine) added 15 and 12 points,
respectively, for the Penmen, while Christine
Duffy (South Boston, Mass.) recorded eight points and
seven assists.
In a see-saw game that saw 23 lead
changes and neither side leading by more than six, Southern New
Hampshire took a 74-73 lead with 12 seconds left on a basket by
Magdala Johnson (Sandown, N.H.). Following
two timeouts, Saint Michael's took the lead with 0.4 seconds on the
clock on Keller's layup.
Saint Michael's held a 71-68 lead
with just over three minutes left, but the Penmen would score the
game's next four points, with Carrington's layup with 1:40 to play
putting the guests on top 72-71. After the teams traded empty
trips, Logan Pintka scored with 28 seconds left to give Saint
Michael's a 73-72 lead.
Southern New Hampshire trailed
53-51 went it used an 8-0 run to take the largest lead by either
team, 59-53, with just under 11 minutes to play on a McDade
layup. Saint Michael's countered with a 7-0 run and a basket
by Keller at the 8:26 mark gave the hosts a 60-59 advantage.
The Penmen scored five straight
points to eke out a 30-25 lead with just over seven minutes to play
in the first half on a free throw by Duffy. Southern New
Hampshire, which led over much of the final 10 minutes of the first
half after the lead changed hands eight times in the game's first
3:38, took a 41-40 lead into intermission.
Both teams shot the ball well, as
Saint Michael's was 48.4% from the floor and SNHU 47.5%. The
Penmen, who outrebounded the Purple Knights 34-33, were 12-18 at
the free throw line while the hosts were 8-10 at the charity
stripe.
Southern New Hampshire returns to
action Saturday when it hosts Stonehill College in a 1:30 contest
at the SNHU Fieldhouse.
