MANCHESTER, N.H. - Ashara
Carrington (Marblehead, Mass.) totaled 25 points and nine
rebounds to lead Southern New Hampshire University as it held off a
late UMass Lowell rally to post a 70-61 Northeast-10 women's
basketball triumph at the SNHU Fieldhouse Tuesday night. The
Penmen improved to 12-13 overall and 8-10 in the NE-10 with the
win, while the River Hawks, who saw a three-game win streak
snapped, are now 14-8 and 10-8 in the league.
Carrington finished 8-14 from the
floor and 9-11 at the charity stripe while also adding three
steals. Carrington now needs just 23 points to reach the
1,000 mark for her career. She was one of four
Penmen players in double figures. Christine
Duffy (South Boston, Mass.) was 3-6 behind the arc and
finished with 13 points, scoring all of her points in the first
half, while dishing out four assists. Jenny
McDade (Derry, N.H.) posted a double-double with 12 points
and 10 rebounds, while Sloane Sorrell (Berwick,
Maine) added 10 points and nine rebounds.
Bianca Simmons led UML with 23
points, going 9-18 from the floor, and also grabbed six rebounds,
while Jen Valente was 7-10 from the floor and 3-4 behind the arc en
route to 17 points.
Southern New Hampshire led 62-46
with 5:32 to go when the River Hawks used a 15-2 run to pull within
three, 64-61, with 1:25 to play following a jumper by
Simmons. Following an empty Penmen trip, the River Hawks came
down and Simmons would drive to the basket, but Duffy slid in and
drew a charge on Simmons. On the inbounds, SNHU found
Carrington behind the UMass Lowell pressure and she converted a
layup to make it 66-61. A three by UML's Rahshala Valentine
was off the mark and the Penmen would seal the win at the line.
Valente would score the first field
goal of the second half, then the Penmen held the River Hawks
without a field goal for a stretch of 14:46, as UML missed 18
straight shots from the field until a Sarah Bennett layup with 4:41
left. Southern New Hampshire used a 12-0 run to build a 54-40
lead with 16:17 left on a Carrington basket, and took their largest
lead, 61-44, with 8:40 to play on another Carrington basket.
Both teams shot the ball well in
the first half, as SNHU was 15-26 (57.7%) from the floor and UML
17-31 (54.8%) over the first 20 minutes. The Penmen opened up
a 15-8 lead five minutes into the game following a Sorrell basket
and took their largest first half lead, 38-27, with 4:13 before
halftime on a Duffy three. The River Hawks would outscore the
hosts 11-4 the rest of the half and a Valente basket 50 seconds
before intermission made it 42-38 in favor of SNHU at the break.
Southern New Hampshire, which
outrebounded UMass Lowell 46-32, shot 41.8% for the game while
limiting the River Hawks to 38.3% shooting, including just 6-29
(20.7%) over the final 20 minutes. The Penmen made 10 more
trips to the free throw line, going 20-28 at the stripe while UML
was just 11-18 from the line.
Southern New Hampshire returns to
action Saturday when it hosts Bentley University in a 1:30
contest. That game is the WBCA "Pink Zone" game to promote
breast cancer awareness, with all fans wearing pink to Saturday's
doubleheader receiving free admission.
