Softball Sweeps Post

WATERBURY, Conn. – The Southern New Hampshire University softball team swept Post University, needing eight innings to down the Eagles 4-2 in the opener before completing the sweep with a 8-5 win in the nightcap.  SNHU is now 3-3, while Post is 3-13 overall.

Jessica Douillette (Concord, N.H.) delivered the game-winning hit in the top of the eighth of game one, a two-run single to center that plated Kate Stanley (Kingston, Mass.) and Melissa Vitagliano (Bedford, N.H.).  Stanley had reached on a one-out single, while Vitagliano reached on an error by the Eagle left fielder.

Post took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second, but the Penmen would get a run back in the fourth when Kelsea Cheney (Abington, Mass.) led off the frame with a single and scored when Vitagliano reached on an error.  Southern New Hampshire would tie the game in the top of the sixth when Elena Anderson (Salem, Wisc.) delivered a two-out double and scored on a single by Vitagliano.

Stanley, Douillette and Vitagliano had two hits apiece as the Penmen outhit the Eagles 9-4.  Kelsey Griffin (Scarborough, Maine) went the distance in the circle for the Penmen, allowing only four hits and no earned runs while fanning four.

In the nightcap, the Penmen plated six runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 8-3 lead.  Southern New Hampshire took advantage of three Post errors and received a three-run home run off the bat of Nikki Newell (Abington, Mass.).

Post took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first, but the guests would tie the game in the second when Newell delivered a two-run single to score Anderson and Vitagliano.  The Eagles reclaimed the lead in the bottom half of the fourth on a Sam Canning home run.

Newell finished 2-3 at the plate with five runs driven in, while Doillette and Cristy Jenkins (Hudson, Mass.) also finished with two hits apiece.  Jen Garloff (Lebanon, Pa.) earned the win for Southern New Hampshire, working six innings and scattering five hits while fanning five.  Amanda Barton (Franklin, N.H.) worked a 1-2-3 seventh to pick up the save.

Southern New Hampshire returns to action Friday when it travels to the University of Bridgeport for a 3:00 twinbill.
