BROOKVILLE, N.Y.
– No. 17 C.W. Post swept a non-conference softball
doubleheader from Southern New Hampshire University by scores of
2-1 and 4-0 Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers improved to 13-5
overall, while the Penmen are now 3-5 on the season.
In the opener, SNHU took a 1-0 lead
when Cristy Jenkins (Hudson, Mass.) and
Kelsea Cheney (Abington, Mass.) hit back-to-back
doubles in the third to plate Jenkins. The Pioneers would tie
the game in the sixth and a walkoff single by Katie Fisher in the
bottom of the seventh scored Kendall Bright, who led off the inning
with a double.
Jenkins and Cheney each had three
hits as the Penmen outhit the Pioneers 10-8. Kelsey
Griffin (Scarborough, Maine) worked six-plus innings and
took the loss for the Penmen, allowing eight hits and fanning
two. Sarah Kiser recorded 0.2 innings in relief of Pioneer
starter Christina Berardi to earn the win. Berardi is the
sister of SNHU freshman outfielder Jessica Berardi
(Raynham, Mass.).
In the nightcap, C.W. Post scored
all four of its runs in the fourth inning. The Pioneers
banged out five hits and also utilized a walk, a hit by pitch and a
passed ball.
Jenkins and Cheney each had two
hits for the Penmen as SNHU totaled seven hits. Jen
Garloff (Lebanon, Pa.) took the loss for SNHU, working the
first 3.1 innings.
SNHU faces Molloy in a doubleheader
to be played at New York Institute of Technology on Sunday starting
at 12:00.
