OLD WESTBURY, N.Y.
– Molloy College swept a non-conference softball
doubleheader from Southern New Hampshire University by scores of
6-3 and 5-3 Sunday afternoon in a twinbill played at New York
institute of Technology. The Lions improve to 14-4 with the
wins, while the Penmen are 3-7.
In the nightcap, SNHU held a 3-1
lead after five and a half innings as it plated single runs in the
second, fourth and fifth frames. The Lions would collect four
runs in the bottom of the sixth, taking advantage of four hits and
a Penmen error.
The Penmen took a 1-0 lead in the
second when Kelsea Cheney (Abington, Mass.)
reached on an error to lead off the inning and scored when
Melissa Vitagliano (Bedford, N.H.), the next
batter, also reached on a defensive miscue. After the Lions
tied the game in the third, SNHU took a 2-1 lead in the fourth when
a double by Andrea Clausi (Kingston, N.Y.) scored
Cheney. The guests made it 3-1 in the fifth when
Cristy Jenkins (Hudson, Mass.) doubled to
right-center to plate Kate Stanley (Kingston,
Mass.).
Cheney finished with a pair of RBI
in the nightcap, while Jenkins extended her hit streak to six
games. Jen Garloff (Lebanon, Pa.) took the
loss for the Penmen, allowing nine hits and five runs while
striking out three and issuing six walks.
Molloy would score twice in the
second and third innings of the opener to take a 4-0 lead.
The Penmen would halve the lead with two runs in the top of the
fourth when Cheney belted a two-run home run to left that also
scored Jenkins. The Lions scored twice in the bottom of the
inning. The other Penmen run came in the fifth when a single
by Kelsey Griffin (Scarborough, Maine) scored
Stanley, who worked a two-out walk.
Stanley and Jenkins each had two
hits in the opener. Amanda Barton (Franklin,
N.H.) took the loss, allowing seven hits and four runs in three
innings. Griffin did not allow an earned run in three innings
of relief work.
Southern New Hampshire opens its
home and Northeast-10 schedules Tuesday when it hosts Bentley
University in a 3:00 twinbill at Penmen Field.
