– Le Moyne College slugged its way past Southern New
Hampshire University in a Northeast-10 softball doubleheader
Saturday, winning by scores of 11-8 and 9-8. The Dolphins
improved to 8-12 and 6-4 in the NE-10, while the Penmen are 7-13
and 4-6 in the league.
In the opener, Le Moyne jumped out
to a 6-0 lead with four runs in the third and two more in the
fourth. The Penmen would get on the board with two runs in
the top of the fifth. A two-run double to right by
Kelsey Griffin (Scarborough, Maine) scored pinch
runner Nikki Newell (Abington, Mass.) and
Andrea Clausi (Kingston, N.Y.).
Southern New Hampshire would take a
7-6 lead with five runs in the top of the sixth. The Penmen
would get a pair of two-run home runs from Griffin and Kate Stanley (Kingston, Mass.) as they collected three hits and
also took advantage of two Le Moyne errors. The Dolphins
would answer with five runs of their own in the bottom half of the
frame, banging out five hits, including a two-run double by Leah
Ford.
Cristy Jenkins
(Hudson, Mass.) would lead off the top of the seventh with a solo
home run for the Penmen to make it 11-8, but the Penmen would get
no closer.
Melissa Pessotti
(Burlington, Mass.) collected three hits in the opener while
Griffin had a pair of hits and four RBI. Jen Garloff (Lebanon, Pa.) took the loss for SNHU, allowing
four hits and five runs in two innings of relief.
In game two, SNHU scored three
times in the top of the first and added four runs in the second to
take a 7-2 lead. Elena Anderson (Salem,
Wis.) delivered a two-run double in the second, while Jenkins added
a run-scoring single. Le Moyne would replace starter Katelyn
Fowler with Jenna Vanacore with one away in the second, and
Vanacore allowed just three hits the rest of the way.
Le Moyne would take the lead with
three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Morgan Edmondson
delivered a two-run single up the middle, and Barbara Shea followed
that up with an infield single that scored Bailey Phillips.
Griffin worked the sixth in relief
for the Penmen and took the loss. Jenkins led the Penmen with
three hits, while Anderson and Clausi finished with two hits
apiece.
Southern New Hampshire travels to
Saint Rose for a noon doubleheader Sunday.
