MANCHESTER, N.H. – Elena Anderson's (Salem, Wis.)
walkoff single in the bottom of the seventh inning of game two
completed a Southern New Hampshire University sweep of Saint Anselm
College in Northeast-10 softball Tuesday afternoon by scores of 5-3
and 3-2. The Penmen, who improved to 5-1 at home, are now
10-14 overall and 7-7 in the NE-10, while the Hawks are 13-15 and
6-8 in the league.
Kelsey Griffin
(Scarborough, Maine) opened the seventh by working a leadoff walk
and was lifted for pinch runner Jessica Berardi
(Raynham, Mass.). Berardi would move to second on a sacrifice
bunt by Nikki Newell (Abington, Mass.) and
advanced to third on a groundout to the left side by Kate
Stanley (Kingston, Mass.).
With two away, Anderson delivered a
line drive down the left field line that snuck under the glove of
charging Hawk left fielder Jackie Giannino to plate Berardi.
Giannino gave Saint Anselm a 1-0
lead in the top of the first with her solo home run to
left-center. The Penmen would take a 2-1 lead in the fifth
when Stanley belted a two-run homer to center field. The
Hawks would tie the game in the top of the sixth when Giannino
opened the frame with a walk and scored when Raylyn Glavin reached
on a bases-loaded fielders' choice, with SNHU electing to get the
out at third.
Stanley had three of SNHU's six
hits in the opener as the Penmen outhit the Hawks 6-3.
Griffin worked 1.2 innings of relief to get the win, allowing just
one hit while fanning two. Jen Garloff (Lebanon,
Pa.) allowed two hits in 5.1 innings of work, but walked six.
In game one, Saint Anselm trailed
2-1 in the fifth when Giannino and Liz Trafton hit back-to-back
solo home runs to give the Hawks a 3-2 lead. The Penmen would
tie the game when Anderson was hit by a pitch to lead off the
bottom of the fifth, and scored on a sac fly by Melissa
Vitagliano (Bedford, N.H.).
Southern New Hampshire would hit
two home runs of its own in the sixth to grab the lead for
good. Andrea Clausi
(Kingston, N.Y.) hit one to center as the leadoff batter to give
the hosts a 4-3 lead, then Stanley hit her first of the afternoon
to right center with one away and no one on.
SNHU took a 1-0 lead in the first
when a single by Melissa Pessotti
(Burlington, Mass.) plated Anderson, then went up 2-0 in the second
when Kelsea Cheney (Abington, Mass.) led off with
a double and scored when Stanley reached on an error. Saint
Anselm got on the board in the fourth when Lizzy LeBrun led off
with a home run to left.
Cristy Jenkins
(Hudson, Mass.) led the Penmen with three hits in the opener as
SNHU outhit Saint Anselm 11-9. Pessotti and Cheney had two
hits apiece, while Giannino led the Hawks with three hits.
Griffin earned the win for the Penmen in the circle, scattering
nine hits while fanning four.
SNHU is idle until Saturday when it
is scheduled to host Adelphi University in a noon doubleheader.
