MANCHESTER, N.H.
– Southern New Hampshire University and Adelphi
University halved a Northeast-10 softball doubleheader Monday
afternoon at Penmen Field. The Penmen posted a 2-1 win in the
opener, before the Panthers blanked the home team 4-0 in game
two. SNHU is now 13-15 overall and 10-8 in the NE-10, while
Adelphi is 21-17 and 9-9 in the league.
In the opener, all three runs came
via the home run. Kelsea Cheney (Abington,
Mass.) gave the Penmen a 1-0 lead when she smacked a solo shot to
left in the second. Amanda Dolan tied the game for Adelphi
with her two out solo shot to center in the fourth.
Cristy Jenkins (Hudson, Mass.) led off the bottom
of the fourth with her home run to left that closed out the
scoring.
Kelsey Griffin
(Scarborough, Maine) earned the win for Southern New Hampshire,
allowing four hits and registering five strikeouts without walking
a batter. Leighann Bell was the hard-luck loser for Adelphi,
scattering six hits while fanning two. Jenkins paced SNHU
with a pair of hits while Shay Craig had two hits for Adelphi.
In the nightcap, Adelphi took a 1-0
lead on the game's first batter when Rochelle Noren hit a
solo home run to left center. The Panthers tacked on a run in
the fourth when Dolan worked a leadoff walk and pinch-runner
Jacqueline Bellairs scored on a single by Heather Salerno.
The Panthers tacked on two
insurance runs in the sixth. Amy Ogden singled to lead off
the frame and scored when Christine Robinson reached on a
fielders' choice. Robinson would eventually score on a
single by Emily Dorko.
SNHU's best chance to get on
the board came in the second when Cheney and Andrea Clausi (Kingston, N.Y.) reached on back-to-back one out
singles. The Penmen would load the bases when Jessica Berardi (Raynham, Mass.) worked a two-out walk, but
Kate Stanley (Kingston, Mass.) popped out to end
the threat.
Robinson recorded the complete-game
shutout for Adelphi, scattering six hits and fanning five.
Jen Garloff (Lebanon, Pa.) worked the first two
innings for SNHU and allowed two hits and one run to take the
loss. Griffin went the final five innings and surrendered
three hits and a pair of earned runs while fanning five.
Cheney had two hits for Southern New Hampshire in the nightcap.
Southern New Hampshire returns to
action Wednesday afternoon when it travels to Franklin Pierce for a
3:00 doubleheader.
