– Visiting Southern New Hampshire University swept a
Northeast-10 softball doubleheader from Franklin Pierce University
by scores of 9-5 and 5-1 Wednesday afternoon. The Penmen, who
have won eight out of their last 10, evened their overall record at
15-15 while improving to 12-8 in the NE-10. The Ravens are
now 13-20 and 8-12 in the league.
Senior third baseman Andrea Clausi (Kingston, N.Y.) homered in both ends of the
twinbill for her 20th and 21st career home
runs, tying Ashley Bernstein for the program record for career home
runs. Bernstein played for the Penmen from 2006-09.
Clausi's home run in game two was also her 100th
career hit, making her the 10th player in program
history to reach the 100-hit mark.
Fifth-year head coach Deb
Robitaille won her 100th career game with the
sweep. The winningest coach in Penmen softball history, she
owns a 100-96 career mark.
In the opener, the Penmen grabbed
single runs in the first three innings but still trailed 5-3 after
three. In the first, Kate Stanley (Kingston,
Mass.) led off the game with a home run, while Clausi homered to
lead off the second. In the third, Cristy Jenkins (Hudson, Mass.) led off with a single and scored
on a base hit to center by Melissa Vitagliano
(Bedford, N.H.).
Franklin Pierce scored twice in the
first when Jessica Furtado belted a two-run homer to center,
while in the second, the Ravens would collect four hits while also
taking advantage of a walk, a wild pitch and an error.
Southern New Hampshire rallied with
six runs over the final three innings to pick up the win. In
the fifth, Jenkins led off by reaching on an error and scored on a
single by Kelsea Cheney (Abington, Mass.).
In the sixth, a three-run home run to center by Elena Anderson (Salem, Wis.) plated Clausi and Nikki
Newell (Abington, Mass.).
The Penmen tacked on two runs in
the top of the seventh as Jessica Berardi
(Raynham, Mass.) and Stanley worked back-to-back bases loaded walks
to score Cheney and Clausi.
Cheney led the Penmen with three
hits in the opener as SNHU outhit Franklin Pierce 13-8.
Stanley, Clausi and Newell all finished with two hits apiece.
Furtado and Rachel Baxter each had two hits for the Ravens.
Kelsey Griffin
(Scarborough, Maine) earned the win for SNHU, allowing eight hits
and five runs in her complete game. Griffin allowed just two
hits over the final five innings and retired 14 of the final 16
Raven hitters.
In the nightcap, Vitagliano broke
open a scoreless game when she led off the third with a solo home
run. Clausi's home run to left with two away in the
fourth made it 2-0 before FPU grabbed its lone run in the bottom of
the frame when a Furtado double scored Aimee Lamoureux.
SNHU would plate three runs in the
fifth. A single up the middle by Anderson brought Berardi
home after she reached on an error. A double down the right
field line by Jenkins scored Stanley, while a sac fly by
Melissa Pessotti (Burlington, Mass.) allowed
Anderson to score from third.
Anderson, Cheney and Vitagliano
each recorded two hits for the Penmen as they outhit Franklin
Pierce 9-5. Jen Garloff (Lebanon, Pa.)
allowed just five hits in her complete-game victory, giving up just
one run while fanning a career-high 10 and walking two.
Southern New Hampshire returns to
action Saturday when it travels to Assumption College for a 1:00
twinbill.
