– The Southern New Hampshire University softball
team swept a doubleheader from Stonehill College by scores of 4-1
and 5-2 Saturday afternoon. The Penmen improved to 6-8
overall and 3-1 in the NE-10, while the Skyhawks are now 6-8-1
overall and 1-3 in the league.
In the opener, SNHU would get on
the board in the bottom of the fourth when Kelsea
Cheney (Abington, Mass.) worked a leadoff walk and scored
on a double down the right field line by Kelsey
Griffin (Scarborough, Maine). The Penmen would then
plate three runs in the fifth. Cristy
Jenkins (Hudson, Mass.) reached on a one-out double and
scored on a single by Cheney. The next batter,
Melissa Vitagliano (Bedford, N.H.), belted a
two-run home run to make it 4-0.
Stonehill would get a run in the
seventh when Nicole Eisenmann worked a leadoff walk and pinch
runner Casey Remick would score on a single by Kellie
Reardon. The game would end when Sarah Stumper tried to score
on the same single, only to be gunned down at the plate by SNHU
center fielder Kate Stanley (Kingston, Mass.).
Griffin earned the win for the
Penmen, working 6.1 innings and allowing just two hits while
fanning five without a walk. She also had two hits along with
Cheney as the Penmen outhit the Skyhawks 9-2. Samantha Krantz
took the loss for Stonehill, surrendering seven hits and four runs
in her 4.2 innings of work.
In the nightcap, Stonehill would
take a 1-0 lead in the first when Courtney Marchand worked a
two-out walk and scored on a double by Eisenmann. Katy Abarr
would make it 2-0 in the top of the second when she singled to lead
off the frame and scored on a double by Stumper.
The Penmen would score four times
in the bottom of the second to take a 4-2 lead. SNHU
collected four hits in the frame, including RBI doubles by
Elena Anderson (Salem, Wis.) and Melissa
Pessotti (Burlington, Mass.), but also took advantage of a
pair of Skyhawk errors and a hit by pitch.
SNHU would score its fifth run in
the fourth when Jenkins singled down the left field line with one
out and came home on a double by Cheney.
Griffin earned her second win of
the afternoon, surrendering just four hits in a complete-game
effort while striking out two. Pessotti led Southern New
Hampshire with a pair of hits as the hosts outhit Stonehill
8-4. Eisenmann had two hits for the Skyhawks. Kait
Mendall took the loss for Stonehill, allowing six hits and four
runs (one earned) in her 2.2 innings of work.
Southern New Hampshire returns to
action Tuesday afternoon when it hosts Bentley in a 3:00
doubleheader at Penmen Field.
