Softball Drops Pair at UMass Lowell

LOWELL, Mass. – Host UMass Lowell swept a Northeast-10 softball doubleheader from Southern New Hampshire University by scores of 11-7 and 8-2 Wednesday afternoon at River View Field.  The River Hawks improve to 12-14 and 5-3 in the NE-10, while the Penmen are 7-11 and 4-4 in the league.

In the opener, Southern New Hampshire would belt a total of five home runs.  Cristy Jenkins (Hudson, Mass.) staked the Penmen to a 2-0 lead in the first with her two-run blast to right.  Down 4-2 in the third, Elena Anderson (Salem, Wis.) delivered a two-run homer to left that tied the game 4-4.

Trailing 5-4 entering the fourth, the Penmen would deliver three solo shots.  Melissa Vitagliano (Bedford, N.H.) and Andrea Clausi (Kingston, N.Y.) led off the inning with back-to-back blasts, then Kate Stanley (Kingston, Mass.) drilled a two-out round-tripper to make it 7-5. 

The River Hawks, however, would score six times in the bottom of the fourth to take an 11-7 lead.  The key hit was a three-run home run by Alyssa Bryan, her second homer of the contest.

Stanley and Vitagliano each collected three hits in the opener as the River Hawks outhit the Penmen 13-10.  Jen Garloff (Lebanon, Pa.) and Kelsey Griffin (Scarborough, Maine) each worked three innings in the circle for the Penmen, with Griffin working the final three innings to take the loss.

In the nightcap, SNHU scored twice in the first to take a 2-0 lead.  Anderson reached on a one-out single and scored on a wild pitch.  Jenkins scored the other run when she came home on a groundout by Melissa Pessotti (Burlington, Mass.).

UMass Lowell would score in the bottom of the first then take the lead for good with two runs in the second.  The River Hawks scored at least one run in five of their six at-bats in game two.  UML outhit Southern New Hampshire 7-4 in the nightcap.

Griffin worked a complete game for SNHU, surrendering seven hits and five walks.

Southern New Hampshire returns to action Saturday when it travels to Le Moyne College for a 3:00 doubleheader.
