Softball Closes Out Season, Drops Two to No. 11 New Haven

MANCHESTER, N.H. – No. 11 University of New Haven posted a doubleheader sweep of Southern New Hampshire University in Northeast-10 softball Sunday afternoon at Penmen Field.  The Chargers held off a late Penmen rally for a 6-4, nine-inning win in game one, then completed the sweep with a 14-3, five-inning victory.  UNH improved to 38-4 and 26-2 in the NE-10 with the win, while the Penmen see their season come to a close at 18-22 and 15-15 in the league.

In the opener, SNHU trailed 4-1 in the sixth when it came up with three runs to tie the game.  Kate Stanley (Kingston, Mass.) led off with a walk, and after an Elena Anderson (Salem, Wis.) single, Cristy Jenkins (Hudson, Mass.) reached on a fielders' choice.  The Chargers tried to erase Anderson at second, but she got under the tag to give the hosts bases loaded with no outs.

Kelsea Cheney (Abington, Mass.) singled to shallow left to plate Stanley.  After the next batter lined to left, Melissa Pessotti (Burlington, Mass.) singled to score Anderson.  Andrea Clausi (Kingston, N.Y.) tied the game when her sacrifice fly to center scored Jenkins, who tagged from third and scored.

New Haven would score twice in the ninth with two outs.  Chelsea Harold worked a two-out walk, then Christina Gelardi singled.  Alyssa Downs would single through the left side to score Harold, while Gelardi would score on a single down the left field line by Bre Gleason.

Southern New Hampshire nearly staged a two-out rally of its own in the bottom of the ninth.  Sammi Chickering (Hillsboro, N.H.) worked a two-out walk, then Kelsey Griffin (Scarborough, Maine) singled up the middle to bring the winning run to the plate in the form of Stanley.  Gleason, pitching in relief, would get Stanley swinging to end the game.

Gleason gave the Chargers a 2-0 lead in the first with her two-run home run.  New Haven tacked on single runs in the second and fourth.  SNHU got on the board in the bottom of the fourth as a Melissa Vitagliano (Bedford, N.H.) single scored Jenkins.

Downs had three of New Haven's 11 hits as the Chargers outhit the Penmen 11-7.  Gleason worked 3.2 innings of relief, allowing just one hit and striking out six.  Keri Tricinelli worked 5.1 innings and allowed six hits and four runs.

Anderson finished with two of SNHU's seven hits in the opener.  Griffin took the loss, allowing six runs and 11 hits in nine innings of work.

In the nightcap, the Chargers pounded out 12 hits in five innings and also took advantage of four walks issued by SNHU pitching as well as four Penmen errors.  New Haven jumped out to a 7-0 lead after two innings and posted five runs in the fifth, with a grand slam by Downs the exclamation point.

Southern New Hampshire's three runs came in the fourth came on a three-run home run by Clausi that also scored Cheney and Pessotti.  It marked Clausi's eighth of the season and school-record 23rd for the senior.

Downs finished with two home runs and seven RBI for the Chargers while Gleason led New Haven with three hits.  She also recorded the five-inning victory, allowing two hits while fanning seven.

Jen Garloff (Lebanon, Pa.) worked the first 1.1 innings for SNHU and took the loss.  Stanley worked the final 3.2 innings in the circle for the Penmen.
