MANCHESTER, N.H. – Mohamed Toufik's (Grande Synthe, France) goal with just under 15 minutes to play lifted No. 14 Southern New Hampshire University to a 2-1 Northeast-10 men's soccer win over American International College at a snowy Larkin Field Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Penmen extend their best-in-the-nation win streak to 12 games and are now 15-2 and 11-2 in the NE-10, while the Yellow Jackets see their season come to a close at 5-10-3 and 4-7-2 in the league.
SNHU has secured the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Northeast-10 Tournament and will host seventh-seeded Bentley University in a quarterfinal on Tuesday at 4:00 pm. The Penmen defeated the Falcons 3-0 during the regular season.
Trailing 1-0 at halftime, Chris Tsonis (Dartmouth, Mass.) got the Penmen on the board in the 64th minute. Taking a free kick just outside the 18, he fired a low liner through the wall and past Yellow Jacket keeper Jason Ryan.
At the 75:09 mark, P.J. Burnette (Brunswick, Maine) took a long crossing pass from Ruben Resendes (Fall River, Mass.) at the far right post. He headed it into the center of the box for Toufik, who collected it and fired into an open AIC goal for the eventual game-winner.
American International took a 1-0 lead in the game's 16th minute on Ike Ekwueme's 25-yard laser that found the upper left corner of the goal. Thomas Denomme assisted on the tally.
Jon Mayo (Merrimack, N.H.) played the second half in goal for Southern New Hampshire and made one save for the victory. Mark Painchaud (Concord, N.H.) started and played the first 45 minutes, making three saves. Ryan turned aside six shots for AIC, which was outshot by the hosts 18-14.
