Box Score MANCHESTER, N.H. – Sophomore Victoria Wiseman (Montreal, Quebec) finished with a career-high 17 points off the bench as Southern New Hampshire University posted a 72-53 non-conference women's basketball victory over Mercy College Saturday afternoon at the SNHU Fieldhouse. The Penmen improved to 2-0 with the win, while the Mavericks fell to 0-2.
Wiseman, a graduate of New Hampton (N.H.) School, finished 5-10 from the floor and 7-9 at the free throw line in 18 minutes of action. She also added four rebounds and a pair of steals. Michelle DeRoma (West Roxbury, Mass.) knocked down four of her five three-point attempts and recorded 16 points, while Sloane Sorrell (Berwick, Maine) added 15 points and nine rebounds, going 7-10 from the floor. Christine Duffy (South Boston, Mass.) registered seven points while dishing out eight assists.
Maria Nardulli and Talia Beaulieu paced Mercy with 10 points apiece.
Southern New Hampshire never trailed and opened up a 16-8 lead 7:33 into the game following a basket by Lorreta Rocha (Espargos, Cape Verde). The Mavericks used a 7-3 spurt to pull within 19-15 at the 8:44 mark on a three by Jessica Biggs, but the Penmen countered with a 14-6 run to make it 33-21 with 4:22 left before intermission on a DeRoma three. SNHU took a 37-29 lead into the locker room.
The hosts gradually pulled away, with a pair of free throws by Megan Smith (Smithfield, Maine) midway through the second half giving SNHU a 55-38 lead. The Penmen took their largest lead, 71-48, with just over three minutes to go on a conventional three-point play by Sorrell that capped a 10-0 run.
Southern New Hampshire shot 44.1% for the contest (26-59) while limiting Mercy to 31% shooting in the second half and 33.9% for the contest. The Penmen went 15-21 at the free throw line and connected on five of their nine three-point attempts while the Mavericks were just 8-16 at the charity stripe.
SNHU opens Northeast-10 play on Wednesday night when it hosts Saint Michael's College in a 5:30 contest at the SNHU Fieldhouse.
