LOWELL, Mass. – Victoria Wiseman (Montreal, Quebec) led a balanced Southern New Hampshire University attack with 12 points as the Penmen defeated UMass Lowell 58-40 in Northeast-10 women's basketball Sunday afternoon at the Costello Center.  The Penmen improved to 5-0 and 3-0 in the NE-10, while the River Hawks are 1-4 and 0-3 in the league.

With the win, SNHU is off to its best start since the 1988-89 season, when the Penmen started 8-0.

Wiseman finished 6-9 from the field and also grabbed seven rebounds.  Sloane Sorrell (Berwick, Maine), Brooke Springfield (Jaffrey, N.H.) and Michelle DeRoma (West Roxbury, Mass.) all finished with nine points apiece.  Sorrell grabbed nine rebounds while DeRoma handed out six assists.  Christine Duffy (South Boston, Mass.) added eight points for Southern New Hampshire.

Sha'Nay Bushner was the lone River Hawk in double figures as she finished with 10 points.

Southern New Hampshire, which led 32-22 at halftime, allowed just one UMass Lowell field goal over the first 12 minutes of the second half to build a 45-25 lead with 8:11 left on a Wiseman layup.  The River Hawks would chip away at the lead and made it a 50-38 game with just over two minutes left on a three by Erika Sjoberg but would get no closer.

UMass Lowell led three times in the early going, but Southern New Hampshire took the lead for good with 10:59 remaining in the first half on a pair of Springfield free throws.  The Penmen used a 9-0 run to take an 18-13 lead with 9:42 remaining.  The Penmen led by as many as 12 in the first half and took a 10-point advantage into the locker room.

Southern New Hampshire outrebounded UMass Lowell 38-31 and limited the River Hawks to just 34.9% shooting for the contest.

SNHU returns to action on Wednesday night when it hosts No. 17, Franklin Pierce, in a 5:30 game at the SNHU Fieldhouse.
