Box Score EASTON, Mass. – Sloane Sorrell (Berwick, Maine) scored all 17 of her points in the second half to lead Southern New Hampshire University to a 76-66 Northeast-10 women's basketball victory over Stonehill College Tuesday night at Merkert Gymnasium. The Penmen snapped a two-game slide and improved to 6-2 and 4-2 in the NE-10, while the Skyhawks are 5-4 and 2-4 in the league.
Sorrell finished 7-10 from the floor and also grabbed five rebounds to lead four SNHU players in double figures. Lorreta Rocha (Espargos, Cape Verde) converted all seven of her field goal attempts and tallied 12 of her 14 points in the first half while also grabbing seven rebounds. Christine Duffy (South Boston, Mass.) recorded 13 points while handing out eight assists, while Megan Smith (Smithfield, Maine) added 12 points and five rebounds.
Priscilla Dodoo led Stonehill with 18 points on 9-13 shooting, while Tori Faieta added 12 points and Mary Louise Dixon 10 points and eight boards.
Trailing 31-30 at halftime, Southern New Hampshire opened the second half on an 18-5 run and a layup by Duffy at the 14:09 mark put the Penmen in front by a dozen, 48-36. The Skyhawks trailed 56-45 when they went on an 11-2 run to pull within two, 58-56, with 5:24 remaining.
The Penmen clung to a 60-58 lead when Sorrell made two at the line to make it a four-point game with 2:01 to go. Sorrell came up with a steal on the next Stonehill possession, and she would convert a layup with 1:33 left to make it 64-58. Following an empty Skyhawk trip, Sorrell scored again with 1:10 left to make it 66-58.
Stonehill pulled within four with 33 seconds to go on a Dixon three-pointer, but the Penmen sealed the victory by going 10-10 at the free throw line in the final 46 seconds.
The first half saw 12 lead changes, but Stonehill used a 7-0 spurt capped by an Amy Pelletier basket with 5:50 to go before intermission to build a 23-17 lead. The Penmen trailed 29-23 with 1:44 left but closed the frame on a 7-2 run and a layup by Chelsea Dunham (Johnson, Vt.) before the horn pulled the Penmen within one, 31-30, at the break.
Southern New Hampshire outrebounded Stonehill 32-29 and turned 24 Skyhawk giveaways into 26 points. The Skyhawks shot 50% from the field (28-56) while SNHU was 47.5% (28-59) overall. The guests were 18-19 at the free throw line and connected on two of their three three-point attempts.
SNHU returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Merrimack College in a 1:30 Northeast-10 contest.
