BROOKHAVEN, N.Y.—The Southern New Hampshire University softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader by scores of 8-0 and 6-0 to No. 21 Dowling College on Thursday afternoon in nonconference action. With the losses, the Penmen fall to 2-12 on the season, while the wins keep the Golden Lions undefeated and set their record to 6-0.
Penmen freshman Dolores Mattice (Schenectady, N.Y.) would get the nod in the circle in the first game of the day, pitching 4.1 innings. The Penmen would find themselves down 3-0 entering the bottom of the fifth inning, but a five-run inning ending in a walk-off three-run homerun for Danielle Messina would enact the NCAA mercy rule and end the game. Mattice would round out the day surrendering 11 hits, eight earned runs, and three walks while striking out three.
Dowling College pitcher Felicia Mendoza would hold the Penmen to just three hits, as Cristy Jenkins (Hudson, Mass.), Tesia Stanasek (Blackstone, Mass.) and Amanda Barton (Franklin, Mass.) all connected for singles.
Dowling pitcher Jessie Stavola threw a two-hitter in the nightcap as Barton was able to get one base twice.
Barton also appeared in the circle for the Penmen, throwing seven innings while surrendering 11 hits, six earned runs, and three walks. She posted one strike out on the day.
The Penmen are idle until Saturday, March 26, when they host Molloy College for a nonconference doubleheader at Penmen field. The first game is slated for 12:00 p.m.
