CLERMONT, Fla.—The Southern New Hampshire University softball team wrapped up the third day of tournament action at the National Training Center by dropping the morning game 10-0 to Millersville and the nightcap 5-0 to Winona State. With the losses, the Penmen fall to 1-7 on the season.
Jennifer Garloff (Lebanon, Pa.) took the loss in the first game, pitching two-thirds of the first inning and surrendering six hits and six earned runs. She was relieved by Kelsey Griffin (Scarborough, Mass.) who gave up seven hits and four runs in two innings of work.
Millersville would post two runs in the bottom of the first inning, two in the second and six in the third inning to put the NCAA mercy rule into effect.
Sarah Signore recorded a hit in each of her three plate appearances for Millersville and batted in three runs. Kelly Fitzgerald also had three RBI for Millersville, while Davina Kachnovitz finished with two hits in the win.
Alicia Hughes pitched a two-hitter against the Penmen, sacrificing singles to Melissa Vitagliano (Bedford, N.H.) and Elena Anderson (Salem, Wisc.) in the second and third innings, respectively.
Dolores Mattice (Schnectady, N.Y.) would pitch her first complete game in the loss in the circle in the second game of the day for the Penmen, a 5-0 loss to Winona State. In seven innings of work, Mattice gave up 11 hits and five earned runs while walking four and striking out four.
The two teams would battle through a scoreless first inning, but Winona State would post their first run of the game in the second inning, followed by three in the third. The Penmen would have a chance to come back in the bottom of the fifth inning, as Cara Daly (Plainville, Mass.) walked, Tesia Stanasek (Blackstone, Mass.) reached on a fielder's choice, and Christy Jenkins (Hudson, Mass.) singled to load the bases with two outs. Amanda Barton (Franklin, N.H.) would ground out to the second baseman to end the opportunity for the Penmen.
The Penmen will be back in action tomorrow for day four of their stay at the National Training Center in Clermont, Fla. SNHU is scheduled to play Mansfield at 1:30 p.m. and Urbana at 5:30 p.m.
