MANCHESTER, N.H.—Elena Anderson (Salem, Wisc.) recorded her 100th career hit on a solo homerun in game one of the Southern New Hampshire University softball team's doubleheader against Saint Anselm on Tuesday afternoon. The Penmen posted their Northeast-10 sweep of the season, taking game one 3-1 and topping the Hawks 10-2 in the nightcap. With the wins, the Penmen improve to 11-17 on the season and 9-5 in the NE-10, while the losses drop the Hawks to 11-14 overall and 3-7 in league play.
Kelsey Griffin (Scarborough, Maine) earned the win in the circle for the Penmen, sacrificing just one hit in seven innings of work. The senior pitcher struck out six and walked five on the afternoon.
The Penmen would tally two runs in the fourth inning on a two-run homerun by Melissa Vitagliano (Bedford, N.H.). Anderson would then tally her milestone hit in the top of the sixth inning to give the Penmen a 3-0 advantage. The Hawks lone run and lone hit of the game would come in the sixth inning on a solo homerun by Nicole Boucher, finalizing the score at 3-1.
In the nightcap, the Penmen took a 3-0 lead after two innings and extended the lead to 7-1 at the end of three innings of play. SNHU would tack on three more runs in the top of the sixth inning and Saint Anselm added one in the bottom of the frame to enact the NCAA mercy rule and end the game at the conclusion of the sixth inning with the 10-2 advantage going to the Penmen.
Anderson led the Penmen at the plate in the nightcap with three hits, while Amanda Barton (Franklin, N.H.), Vitagliano, Cristy Jenkins (Hudson, Mass.) and Tesia Stanasek (Blackstone, Mass.) all recorded two hits.
Dolores Mattice (Schenectady, N.Y.) earned her second-straight win in the circle, scattering three hits while striking out six and walking three.
Southern New Hampshire returns to action on Thursday when it hosts Assumption College for a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m. at Penmen Field.
