GARDEN CITY, N.Y.—The visiting Southern New Hampshire University softball team split a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader against Adelphi University on Saturday afternoon, winning the first game 3-0 before dropping the second game 5-2. With the split, the Penmen set their record at 13-19 overall and 11-7 in the Northeast-10, while the Panthers now sit at 16-18 overall and 10-6 in league play.
In the opener, senior Elena Anderson (Salem, Wisc.) led off the third inning with a solo homerun to give the Penmen the 1-0 advantage. The Penmen would tally another run in the third inning, as Cristy Jenkins (Hudson, Mass.) doubled to left field and then scored on a double by Cara Daly (Plainville, Mass.). Melissa Vitagliano (Bedford, N.H.) connected for a solo homerun of her own in the fourth to post the 3-0 advantage for the Penmen. Anderson, Jenkins and Morgan Farmer (Kingston, N.H.) all had two hits in the win. With the win, SNHU snapped a seven-game Adelphi winning streak.
Kelsey Griffin (Scarborough, Maine) earned the win in the complete-game pitching effort, scattering three hits while walking zero batters and striking out three. Katie Andrews took the loss in the circle for Adelphi, who gave up eight hits, three earned runs, and one walk while striking out eight.
In the nightcap, Adelphi connected for four hits including two doubles to take an early 3-0 lead. The Penmen would pose a two-run comeback in the top of the fifth inning as Jenkins was hit by a pitch and Daly walked. Jenkins would score on a single by Nicole Newell (Abington, Mass.), and Daly scored on a bunted single by Brittany Young (Merrimack, N.H.).
With the 3-2 advantage entering the bottom of the fifth, the Panthers would tally two more runs following a walk and three singles.
Dolores Mattice (Schenectady, N.Y.) took the loss in the circle, giving up nine hits, five earned runs, and three walks while striking out four. Leighann Bell earned the win for Adelphi, scattering four hits and walking just one while striking out ten.
Southern New Hampshire returns to action tomorrow, as they travel to Pace University for a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader beginning at 12:00 p.m.
