Sorrell's Career-High 30 Leads Penmen Past Saint Rose

Box Score

ALBANY, N.Y. – Junior Sloane Sorrell (Berwick, Maine) poured in a career-high 30 points to lead Southern New Hampshire University to a 67-65 Northeast-10 women's basketball victory over The College of Saint Rose at Nolan Gymnasium Wednesday night.  The Penmen, who are receiving votes in the latest WBCA Division II poll, won their fourth straight to improve to 13-3 overall and 8-2 in the NE-10, while the Golden Knights suffered their first loss of the season at home and are now 9-5 and 6-4 in the league.

SNHU's win keeps them in a second-place tie in the NE-10 standings, one game behind league-leading Bentley.  The loss for Saint Rose snapped an 18-game home win streak for the Golden Knights dating back to November 17, 2010.

Sorrell finished 13-18 from the floor and made all four of her free-throw attempts to eclipse her previous career-high of 25 points set as a freshman.  She also totaled three assists, three steals, two blocked shots, and three rebounds.  Michelle DeRoma (West Roxbury, Mass.) finished with 11 points, draining a pair of three-pointers, while Victoria Wiseman (Montreal, Quebec) added 10 points on 5-8 shooting while grabbing six rebounds.  Christine Duffy (South Boston, Mass.), who ranks second nationally in assists, had 11 assists to go along with eight points.

Ashley Rath led Saint Rose with 21 points, while Ola Shajuyigbe registered 13 points and Ali Johnson finished with eight points and 10 rebounds.

Saint Rose held a 63-59 lead with 3:25 left following a pair of Rath free throws, but SNHU used a 7-0 run capped by a Sorrell basket with 2:02 left to take a 66-63 lead.  Rath made it a 66-65 game with a pair of free throws with 52 seconds left, but DeRoma was fouled with 28 seconds to go and made 1-of-2 at the line to make it 67-65.

The Golden Knights had two chances to tie or take the lead on their final possession.  Shajuyigbe missed a layup to tie the game with five seconds left, but Johnson grabbed the rebound and the hosts used their final time out.  Rath would misfire on the potential game-winning three-pointer as time expired.

Southern New Hampshire trailed 33-30 at halftime but used a 14-4 run to build a 44-37 lead 3:20 into the second half.  Saint Rose countered with a 13-0 run and a Maria Sanchez layup gave her team a 50-44 lead with 11:17 to go.  The Golden Knights led 57-51 following a Rath three with 7:31 left, but SNHU reeled off eight unanswered points and a three by DeRoma with 5:34 left gave the guests a 59-57 lead.

Saint Rose led much of the first half and opened up a 27-20 lead five minutes before intermission on a Rath trifecta.  The Penmen tied the game with 3:02 left when a conventional three-point play by Sorrell capped a 7-0 run and knotted the game 27-27.  The Golden Knights would eke out a 33-30 halftime advantage.

Southern New Hampshire shot 59.3% in the second half and 51.8% for the game against Saint Rose, which entered the game leading the NE-10 in field goal percentage defense.  The Penmen knocked down four of their nine three-point attempts and were 5-6 at the free-throw line.  The Golden Knights, who outrebounded the Penmen 32-29, made all eight of their free-throw attempts and shot 44.1% for the game, including a 5-16 effort behind the arc.

SNHU returns home Saturday afternoon when it hosts the University of New Haven in a 1:30 Northeast-10 contest.
