MANCHESTER, N.H. – Sloane Sorrell (Berwick, Maine) had career highs of 30 points and 14 rebounds to lead Southern New Hampshire University to a 71-60 win over the University of New Haven in Northeast-10 women's basketball Saturday afternoon at the SNHU Fieldhouse. The Penmen, who are receiving votes in the WBCA Division II poll, won their fifth in a row to improve to 14-3 and 9-2 in the NE-10, while the Chargers are now 2-13 and 2-9 in the league.
With the win, the Penmen remain tied for second in the Northeast-10 with Pace and Southern Connecticut, one game back of league-leading Bentley. Southern New Hampshire hosts Pace in a key contest Tuesday night at 5:30.
Sorrell matched her career high of 30 points set Wednesday at Saint Rose by going 13-21 from the floor, while her 14 rebounds, including six on the offensive end, eclipsed her career best of 13 set three times, including twice this season. Christine Duffy (South Boston, Mass.) registered 13 points, eight rebounds and six assists, while Brooke Springfield (Jaffrey, N.H.), Michelle DeRoma (West Roxbury, Mass.), Lorreta Rocha (Espargos, Cape Verde) and Victoria Wiseman (Montreal, Quebec) all added six points apiece.
Anh-Dao Tran led New Haven with 18 points and five assists, pacing three Chargers in double figures. Nikita Reddy finished with 13 points, while Aquillin Hayes added 10 points and nine rebounds.
The first 12 minutes of the game saw five ties and nine lead changes, with New Haven taking a 29-25 lead with 8:57 left on a Reddy basket. The Penmen took the lead for good on a conventional three-point play by Sorrell 7:05 before halftime, part of a 10-0 run capped by a Rocha basket at the 4:27 mark that made it 35-29. Southern New Hampshire carried a 37-32 lead into the locker room, closing out the half on a larger 12-3 run.
Southern New Hampshire outscored the guests 12-3 over the first seven minutes of the second half, with a Sorrell layup with 12:52 left putting the Penmen up 49-35. New Haven pulled within nine, 59-50, on a three by Reddy with 5:38 to go, but would get no closer.
SNHU held a commanding 52-38 rebounding advantage for the contest, including a 17-7 edge in offensive caroms that led to a 15-4 lead in second chance points. The Penmen, who shot 41.4% from the field, limited the Chargers to 37.5% shooting for the contest. Southern New Hampshire also committed just 12 turnovers, its second-lowest total of the season.
